Saw a c6 in a shop today

Had to go to one of the body shops today to fix their color mixing computer. Saw a c6 corvette that had the unibody lifted off the driveline/subframe. Looked very odd... the transmission was in the back of the car coupled to the differential... driveshaft was just an extension of the crankshaft i guess. I had to do a double take when I saw it. I guess it is designed that way for better weight distribution.

The C6 is an amazing machine considering it costs 50% less than its competitors... sure the interior isn't snazzy but hey the performance is good.

Transmission and differential as a unit is a Transaxle. Not a new idea at all. Many race cars in the 50's, and possibly earlier, (too lazy to look it up) employed this. I had an Alfa GTV6 in 1985 with this arrangement.

Mark

I believe the earliest car to have a transaxle rear engine front may be the Lancias of the early fifties. Of course in the early sixties the pontiac tempest had one coupled with a bent torque tube with a cable inside.

It optimizes the weight distribution very well. The front engine porsches all have it too and some ferraris both for the road and for racing.

It makes service a bit more dicey. Clutch raplacement on the porsche is pretty expensive as the entire drive train excepting the motor must be dropped to do it,iirc.

Yeah Vette's have been set up that way forever.

The new one is cool they store the fuel in the frame rails, to lower and distribute the weight. The frame is all boxed aluminum.

But that is for us old farts to remember!

"Wrap your ass in fiberglass"

I was about 10, at summer camp and distinctly remember this psycho kid with such a tee-shirt. Sort of 70'ish looking, iron on decal.

From them on Corvettes were a stain in my memory

It's a car I've always wanted, and now that I have one, I can't wait to sell it.
Like boats, my happiest two days are gonna be when I bought my Vette, and when I sell it.
I like the headlights personally, GM has made junk hideaways for years.
