Binding sunroof 126 coupe..
 

I don't understand it. This car is almost literally brand new. I've had it for 3.5 weeks now, and the sunroof is sort of binding up, and will not always open or close. Before I bought it, it sat inside a museum like environment for most of the last 19 years, and was barely ever taken out. Could it be a matter of grease or something..?

It's been working great for the past 3.5 weeks, but all of a sudden, in the last 48 hrs or so, it started making all kinds of noises, and sometimes even get sort of jammed in a half way position between open and closed. I hope it will be a matter of adjustment or something, and not be a perminent, ongoing issue. Dealerships are useless to me normally, but do you guys think they could handle this..? I'd like to DIY the thing, if it's something simple.

How do I access it?

Do I need to take down the headliner?

How do I do that without damaging it in the process..?

Sucks to have someone ride in my nice car, and have to tell them not to touch it when they ask if we can open the sunroof.. I just want it to work.

Is it a very complicated system?

Any help would be appreciated..

sitting for 19 years does not guarantee everything will be the same as brand new. seals shrink, tin whiskers form on the computers, grease goes bad...

MB makes some lubricant just for stuff like the sunroof's tracks. Jonhef put some in Mistress's sunroof a while back. It sounded like it was full of dirst and rust, but after putting that stuff in and working the roof open and closed a few times, it was smooth and quiet. I forget what it's called, but Johnhef could tell you.

The sunroof track rails are supposed to be greased regularly, it is a regularly scheduled maintenance item, and commonly overlooked. Mine had the same issue, and the mechanics broke the tabs when they lubed, it so for now I left it in the closed position.
and this wasn't done in your case. Dee8o and John Hef are both correct, it needs a specific lube, unfortunately Mercedes Be3nz sells it in huge tubs, about $50, but I have heard that Rusty's in Atlanta sells small amounts in film canisters for $5-$10

Unfortunately the sunroof on those coupes is a DIYers nightmare, don't try and fix it yourself. Will need a competent and trusted mechanic tha you have to take this on.

After it is fixed, use the pop up feature in the roof sparingly. It is the weak link in these mechanisms, and subject to failure.

Check the trim panel too...
 

Check the trim panel as well. On mine (a sedan) the trim panel warped and was making the sun roof bind up as it was closing. I removed it and gave it a good bend to make it sit right again and it is now working properly.

Who would know better how to answer this question than a guy that has a total of eight MB coupes? You should pm that guy. Oh, wait.....

I know on the w126 sedans, Mercedes upgraded portions of the sunroof mechanism around the time that they performed the 1986 vehicle upgrade. I don't know if the coupe sunroof system was upgraded during that period.

Watch pulling the headliner. It may look great, but it's no spring chicken.
