f150 won't come out of 4wd?

Bought a truck for the lot, payed someone to drive it back, drove it all the way back in 4wd low(about 30 minutes at 60mph...i know, i know....). The truck will not disengange out of 4wd, it transfers fine from 4wd low to high, but will not go into 2wd mode. It is the work version of the f150 and thusly has the manual selector, automatic trans. I do not know if the problem was there before it got driven in 4 low on pavement at high speed for a long time or not, so that may or may not be a contributor. Any ideas? Mechanic says the shift linkage is fine. Thanks,
Ryan

Might check over here:

Stick it in 2 wheel drive, and back up straight for like 30-50 feet. That should disengage the hubs.

My buddies F250 is like that. You stick it into 4 hi, and in oreder to get outta 4, you gotta back it up for a bit.

......and listen for the click - driving it that far you probably have some serious pressure on the transfer case.

Not sure what year you have but do you have your foot on the brake in neutral? It may also not be getting the brake input to the transfer selector (if it's the newer electronic shift)

We had one of those at work (a 2004 or 2005 model, maybe?). It was ridiculously huge. I think it got about 14mpg so we avoided using it as much as possible...

I put it into 4WD once and also couldn't get it back to 2WD. After reading the manual, it seemed that you needed to put it in park or neutral, keep the brake depressed, switch it to 2WD, and then accelerate above a certain speed before 4WD would disengage (or some combination of the above). It was very very very non-intuitive, and I had to try for 10 minutes to get it back to 2WD mode even after reading the manual. The process definitely involved driving it above a certain speed, which couldn't be attained in the parking lot I was in.

I think Justin has it. My past ford and isuzu 4wd's were like this.

make sure to try to shift it while the tranny is in N.

Good old G Wagen, Gurkha, Pajero and TLC all have the easiest to engage 4WD, just shift into 4H at any speed any time and shift back to 2H in the same way, for 4L you have to bring the speed down to below 40mph. G Wagens had this sytem from early 460 series, works without any hitch, even the Bosch hydraulic diff locks are super reliable, never any troube.

Back up, it'll come out. In the 80s, this was the norm for all 4wds - with the push-button 4wds, most people have forgotten about this trick.

Is it an electric shift transfercase or does it have a shifter? I would jack up one of the front wheels and try to disengage. Sometimes the electric motors can give you trouble but it's an easy fix.

Figured out the problem it is a cracked shifter fork. It is the manual type of selector obviously, so back to the auction this truck will go...hopefully i won't lose too much on it. Thanks guys
