One could easily argue that the mouse click has done more for the world than the rattles of tanks or the blasts of atomic bombs. You get an A+.

I have to agree with that as well.

pfffttt

the scratch of a pencil on paper... without it how would we have the drawings for the tank or any paper and board drawing for any mechanical device before computers of course.

Sketching.. gets it done

I'd say the AK47 is more impartant to the 21st century then the tank. Its a very unique sound as well.

They have been heavly used in just about every armed conflict since the 60's. Not to mention probably killed more people then any other weapon in history.

Ahhhh, I remember hearing that song with its perfect harmony coming out over the airwaves of my radio back then and just floating along in the lovely melody, and the mysterious meloncholy lyrics.

They had some good music going back then, Simon and Garfunkle.

I might vote for the sound of rubber tires on pavement since that develpment of paired devices probably affected everyone's life more than anything else.

Ok, my girlfriend and I gave it some thought and finally decided on the dial tone. While the phone itself predates the 20th century, it's use really came into its own and gained widespread popularity during the 20th. The dial tone was even part of the early internet experience. The ability to communicate instantly worldwide, has surely been an instrument of change.

Heck, even tanks take time to get places... (though they do typically arrive with a bit more... how shall we say... "presence" than a mere phone call)
