Rupert Murdoch shoots for relevance: Wall St. Journal swallowed whole

I saw this letter today in the SF Chron. It's one of those bits of prose that makes me wonder if I'll ever be a good writer:

Murdoch's Journal, alas

Editor -- So, the "Murdochcrity" juggernaut gets a thumbs up on its supersize offer for the Wall Street Journal, an honorable business, that will now become less so in quality and integrity ("Tentative deal to buy Wall Street Journal,'' July 17).

Conventional and economic wisdom would have it that the Bancroft family, and its larger stockholder nation, simply could not refuse. This so-called wisdom holds only to one test; that is, maximizing the value of a share of common stock. Isn't it possible to blend this unholy single axiom with other goals in this modern, but suffering, gilded age?

The WSJ is one of the last good papers around. The Times is trash.

I am no fan of Murdoch but it's his money and the sellers are happy. It's kind of like two consenting adults it may not be preety but if everyone is satisfied why not?

Yup. I don't always see eye to eye with the WSJ but I respect them most of the time. The country is well served by strong, honest voices. It is not well served by ax grinding propo, the sort of which Murdoch spews. IMO.

So, will the news report that "the Murdoch slipped 112 points" or that "the NewsCorp index rose on good inflation news . . "

Why didn't they think of that in response to all the Nazi propaganda?

People are suckers. There's no way anything I or my cronies could put up would pull the devoted FOX crowd away.

Listen to FAIR's radio show, Counterspin sometime. They present good examples of spin in the MSM. Murdoch goes a step further than most of them, IMO, as detailed in "Outfoxed." And as witnessed by yours truly.
