Apostle Islands are great.

US National Parks are spectacular. Here I am sitting on the shore of Lake Superior in my motorhome, looking out at the Apostle's and stealing someone's satellite internet connection.
Did our first open water crossing in a sea kayak of about 3 miles, out to Sand Island a couple of days ago. Exhilarating. Crystal clear water, white sand beaches, and very few people in sight.

Since you're way up there already, take a drive up to Copper Harbor - nice scenery, and a little bit of history too. Calumet almost became the Capitol of MI. During the summer, Fort Wilkinson, has actors/actresses playing the part of the Fort's inhabitants from long ago. In Copper Harbor, there used to be a place to get good smoked fish - hopefully it's still there.
Have fun, and take some pics!

I wanted to get up to Copper Harbor but I had to be in New York by tomorrow to catch a flight and I had to pick up my daughter in Duluth last Friday so it'll have to wait until next time. There will definitely be a next time because we loved it. I'm thinking about spending my retirement summers on Lake Superior kayaking and sailing.

Apparently, the islands once had those names. No longer.

really? that's kind of cool. last time i was there the place was packed like no other area near L. Superior.

Copper Harbor is cool but i only recall one restaurant there and i am sure they had fish but i didn't try it at that time. Houghton is a nice town too. A touring mine near L'Anse, old Ford mill and a ghost town.

there are many, many awesome places in UP. Porkies are very cool; so is the Pictured Rocks NLSA. There are many great views, waterfalls and very, very few people in general.

Ste. Sault Marie is cool too. Lot's of hidden gems through out upper MI.

I looked across the lake and thought of you. I was in Grand Marais in the mid-80's on the way to a canoe trip from the Gunflint Trail up through the Falls Chain to the Quetico. I really liked Grand Marais also.
When you called, I was driving across the UP, heading for NY, where we arrived yesterday. Immigration at Buffalo were jerks. Waited in line on the left end of 10 gates and when I was next in line for inspection, the officer walked out and told me I was in the wrong line and needed to be eight lines to the right. This with me driving a 35' motorhome, pulling a car 4 down, and traffic packed all around me in every lane and a half mile behind. What a headache!
