Legally changing last name

What are the steps and costs to changing your last name? No, I'm not getting married (a guy anyway, so wouldn't make any difference) and not running from the law :P It's something I've been thinking about, and I want to change it for personal reasons. Anyone done this before?

probably involves submitting a form at your local town hall. Then wait for it to pass the red tape and public notices, change all your documents

not sure about costs but I am just guessing here

It will cost a family of 5 about $500 in the State of Ohio and your name change is in the local newspaper for a specified amount of time.

I am in Michigan now and looking into it myself again to see the cost difference....

Simply go to your states webpage and do a search on name change....you will be able to download all the forms you need...

Well, you know, a boy named Sue. ;)

Its his biz really.

No big shakes. Court docs and legal notices in local papers.

Do it all the time. ;)

It's pretty simple and straightforward.

In San Francisco, you go to the County Clerk's office and file an order for a change of name.

Then, you put an advertisement in a local newspaper of general circulation (can be one of those legal newspapers that mostly are read by lawyers and juges only, to save you money)

And you go before a Judge in a quick hearing (where anyone could contest the hearing, having presumably read about it in the newspaper ad) and then the order changing you name is granted.

One fellow in SF had his name changed to GOD INVISIBLE; it was pretty funny

I must tell you,I'm quite put out with plain Carleton Winthrop Hughes jr.

Many and painful have been the searching hours when, dissatisfied with that pedestrian appellation I have contemplated changing to the exotic and strangely poetic Philoctetes Borborygmi..........

This is very common. If you have two choices of people to call and you can't decide how to pronounce one of the names you call the one you can pronounce. Get an easy name.
