Debating on upgrading to newer model!

I have a '88 300CE with 185,000 on it. It 's running great. However I'm considering moving up some years and getting a 2000 - 2003, E320 or a 5 series BMW.

I have been told MB's are not what they used to be. Do they have any inherent problems that I should be aware of? The 5 series seems to be very reliable.

Are there any recommendations or personal experiences that you could share with me as to which way I should go.
Thanks.

The best used Mercedes during the era in question is a Lexus LS400.

My mechanic loves the 1997+ E320s - get it inspected first.

The eternal debate. No car is as sturdy as a 123 or 124. Those days are long gone.

I drive about every new car imaginable, (sans ultra exotics). They're ALL full of electronics. Just tons of buttons, video screens etc. Even Infiniti G35s and mid level Lexi. Make my W220 look like a Model A.

The natural progression from a 124 would be a 210. As POS mentioned, take a look at the E320. Tons of info here, use the search feature.

Edit: The Infiniti's aren't exactly appliance-like. Plenty of electrical glitches, not just a German thing anymore.

The most solid, att'n to detail, well crafted, great fit and finish vehicle I've ever driven, (besides a Mercedes 126) is the newest generation Lexus SUV, the LX 470. For whatever reason it seems to top the big sedan.

I have considered a Lexus, however they seem very boring stying wise and sedate on the road.
The wife wants a TL Acura, due to repair costs.
