I like wine now......
After having bad experiences with cheap wines over the years, I vowed never to touch the stuff.
Anyway, in my efforts to drink moderately, I needed something to switch to from scotch or vodka. Too rough. I tried santa margherita and am hooked. Got a real nice buzz and no headaches afterwards. At 23.00 a bottle it better be good. Anyone have any good wine suggestions?

Amazing how that works. I spent many years thinking that I didn't like scotch whiskey. Turns out that I only hate cheap scotch.

Grayson Hills
You might try this one out. It just happens to be my brother and his wife about a mile up the road from my place.
http://www.graysonhillswinery.com/Joomla-1.0.12/ "In the rural countryside of North Texas lies Grayson Hills Winery. Our small vineyard and winery is nestled on 38 acres of rolling hills surrounded by the native woods of large oak, pecan, and redbud trees. Just 45 minutes northeast of Dallas, the landscape of picturesque southeastern Grayson County is one Texas' best kept secrets. Grayson Hills Winery symbolizes the down home sensibility and simplicity that the area evokes. The rolling hills, the country roads, and the aroma of wine from the cellar all tend to your soul. Since 2000, the romance of the vineyard has been shared with families like yours through growing, harvesting and making fine wine. The winery is rooted in our family's pursuit of a dream-to share the passion and celebration of fine grape growing and winemaking while providing a destination that unites the ideals of integrity and respect with creativity and innovation. Our wine brands reflect the changing seasons in the vineyard. The "old red barn" winery overlooks the vineyards in a very secluded setting. At night the stars light up the vineyard and grounds. During events, you can have a glass of wine in “The Loft” or relax on the tasting deck that overlooks the Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. Enjoy a picnic in one of the gardens, a warm fire in one of the pits or just “kick back” in a hammock under the oaks. We cherish your interest and support of our collections, and we hope they inspire you to honor and celebrate family traditions both old and new." Last edited by Whiskeydan; 07-29-2007 at 01:12 PM. |

There are about a million wines out there. It is hard to recommend one because they change constantly and I don't know what is available in your area. Also I am not familiar with that one you mentioned. It is good to figure out what type of wines you like. For example I like Syrahs and Zins quite a bit. Shiraz is the same as Syrah. There are lots of good wines that can be had for 5-10 dollars. There are also lots of bad wines for the same price. Do you have a Trader Joes near you? I am NOT suggesting the 2 buck upchuck that gets so much press. But they have some other wines that are a good deal (and some expensive ones also). I have found recommendations in magazines to be unreliable, especially Consumer Reports, and once the wines are in those magazines the price goes up anyway. As a rule of thumb, on a red, an alcohol content of 13.8 or higher generally indicates a better wine.

I've been really pleased with the Australian Shiraz or the Shiraz Cabernet.
My favorite is the Lindemanns "Bin 55". It's about $10.00 for the larger bottle. Puts some of the better wines to shame. But, you've got to enjoy a powerful red.........naturally. |

Yes, good point, blends are often very good, and the Aussie stuff is often a bargain. I like Shiraz-Cab but I don't care for Cab. Trader Joes sells an Australian Shiraz call Jackaroo that is quite good and very cheap. Another popular one that you can get anywhere is Penfolds www.penfolds.com Some years better than others of course. They have a full range from cheap to expensive and its all pretty good. If I find one I really like then I buy 6 bottles.

If I recall correctly, Walmart entered their wine that sells for $2. a bottle in an International contest and it won!!! I think it was a Chardonney.
This is recently and someone may remember the details better than me. Cheers

That was Trader Joes 2 buck upchuck. And I can pretty much guarantee that the bottle they tested is not what you will find in your local store. Right after this mysterious award was given a local news show in CA did their own blind test with a wine expert and she picked it last. However, Chardonnay's are pretty homogenous IMHO and I am not saying it might not be "OK" to some people but it is pretty bad generally.

The 2005 Charles Shaw Chardonnay just won a Gold Medal at the California Exposition. http://www.abcnews.go.com/WN/story?id=3372578&page=1 http://www.avenuevine.com/archives/003022.html Also from Wikipedia: Charles Shaw is an example of the recent trend of economy-minded wine drinkers seeking the greatest value. In particular the brand stands out not only for the low cost, but also for the respectable packaging and semi-frequent high ratings at wine tasting events. For example, at the 28th Annual International Eastern Wine Competition, Shaw's 2002 Shiraz received the double gold medal, besting the roughly 2,300 other wines in the competition. [1] More recently, Shaw's 2005 California chardonnay was judged Best Chardonnay from California at the 2007 California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition. The chardonnay received 98 points, a double gold, with accolades of Best of California and Best of Class.

Just a note.....Shiraz is the name Australian wine makers gave to Petite Syrah for marketing purposes. It turned out to be a brilliant idea, as Australian wine makers make great shiraz.
