They spend less than the US per student and achieve more results. Yet we insist that the schools need more money. Hmmmm

Good point aklim, money doesn't buy education, will and proper handling does.

If we sent our students there we'd spend less money too. Bring one of those Russian kids over here and try to groom him for the Math Olympiad. It'll still cost $18k/year.

So what if it does? Where again do we rank for the 18K we spent? It all boils down to MOTIVATION. Our students are so poorly motivated it is disgraceful. My point is we need to sort it out better. We have people that are fighting for an education there vs people being dragged into an education. Our students don't appreciate what they have so they squander it, piss away their time, don't learn willingly, etc, etc. More importantly, they drag those who want to learn down. We need to sort out those who really want to and can learn vs those who are passing the time. Spend money on those who want to and can learn and leave the rest behind. When they feel more motivated, they can enter themselves. If not, they will be the dregs of society and motivate others.

China beats the US in a math olympiad--US beats China's human rights record.

Wow! A Pyhrric victory on one hand and a substantial gain on the other. How to choose which one comes out ahead.

The lowest scoring American placed 137 out of 522 kids. We're good.

Oh Wow! I'm so impressed. Beaten out by a bunch of 3rd world countries. There is one winner and 521 losers as far as I can see, student wise. Country wise, we are what? 6 or 7? When you look at the competition, it isn't that impressive at all. 2nd place is first loser and so on.

Sorry, with all the advantages we have, we should be killing those "3rd world backwater" countries. So, IMO, that makes the score rather embarrassing. Kinda like a pro team that gets whipped by a college team like an unwanted stepchild. Sorry Kuan, but with all due respect, this is NOT a score I would be bragging about. In fact, if it were me, I'd rather it be forgotten altogether.

Its getting worse everywhere and even though I am not defending China in any way or comparing with it, things do tend to get exagerrated in the jaundiced media.

Personal freedom and human rights are getting violated and people just act as bystanders.

Actually if you go by the previous Olympiads, quite a few 3rd world backwater countries did quite well and have been doing so traditionally.
