Interesting egg lady story

The other day I decided to stop and get some farm eggs. It is a place that looks a little dumpy and the mrs. has never wanted to stop but I did anyway.

A vivacious fifty something lady comes to the door and I said I wanted four dozen. She brings them out and then I had to ask.....

So what about the Llama in your front yard?

She has this surprisingly large llama, which actually looks a lot like a camel, lying in the front yard watching me and chewing its cud.

She says..."oh I got him to protect my sheep"....I say 'from coyotes?"....she says yes. It turns out she has three ewe sheep all with lambs and has this Llama to protect them. I had heard that they will do this. She described in some detail how the Llama will know when the coyotes are near and will herd the sheep into a tight group and get between them and the coyotes.

So I asked "is he tied up?" No. He just stays right in the yard. She has three acres I think. And the sheep are free to roam too....and this is on US 52 a pretty busy road.

She puts the sheep in a pen at night.

So are Llamas just like sheep dogs? They just instinctively herd and protect sheep?

The eggs are good too.

Llamas are very good watch animals. I have been trying to convince the wife we need one. So far no luck.

At a stable I worked at during my off summers from school, we had two Llamas that roamed the property. They were great at walking up on and surprising people using our pastures for illicit purposes. But dont get on the bad side of one, they are very intelligent and dont forget a face. They can spit similar to a camel as well, with pretty accurate aim. Another stable hand found this out after giving one a kick, that Llama never forgave him.

I thought this was going to be one of those real good stories! You know a storm came and you were forced to spend the night but the egg lady offered you the barn but warned you not to mess with her daughters...........................................

Llamas remind me of Napoleon Dynamite. "Eat your food, Tina!"

No, and the novelty wore out with me a few years back, but we have a big spender who treats who likes the beasts.

We used to play a public course near the lake which was infested with whitetail deer. To play, to play you practically had to shoo them out of the tee boxes and there were piles of deer crap everywhere. I always threatened to carry a skinning knife so that if I happened to plug one with my 3 wood, I could field dress it and salvage the meat.

In Hilton Head, SC its gators. Ten years ago it was what I would call infested as you say at Harbour Town Links and now you just see them all day. I think someone took the law into their own hands over there......

Llamas etc.

The llamas can be found all over Peru. I saw lots of them when I was there.

As far back as the Inca times they were used by the Peruvian Indians for their wool (rather coarse), meat, tallow, and as pack animals that could carry up to 100 lbs.

They are good on golf courses because their cloven hoofs leave no damage to the greens.

In Peru, the alpacas are another related camelid there, which are kept for their wool, primarily, which is finer than llama wool, and used in the textile industries of that country. The baby alpaca wool is the best and finest.
But every street vendor in Peru will tell you "his" goods are the best, they are all baby alpaca wool, and hand, not machine made.

The vicuna, now an endangered and protected species, lives mostly on the high desert areas of Peru. They are much smaller, and very shy compared to the alpacas and llamas. I only ever saw one, and it was in a zoo near Sacsayhuaman outside of Cuzco.

The vicuna fur is highly prized, and extremely fine which was why it was poached to the brink of extinction. They are coming back now, finally.
