Instrument Rebuilder

I petition the Oracle (Open Discussion) for help.

The mechanical speed/hour/RPM meter on my vintage Deere 2040 has crapped out. The Deere 'replacement' part is actually made for a later 2040 and requires a drive which turns the opposite direction. Deere claims the proper part is NLA. Thus, I'm stuck.

I need to find an instrument rebuilder who will/can remanufacture my unit for me. Anyone here know of one?

Is it a cable drive? I wonder if you can obtain some type of gearbox that will reverse the direction of the drive and allow use of the later 2040 guage.

Yes, it's cable driven.

Using the replacement part is an option I considered. Stewart/Warner makes all kinds of direction reversing gearboxes for cable driven instrumentation that I'm confident, given enough time, I could piece together. Also, the replacement gauge is about $245 and who knows what one of those reverser thingys is going to run...$30-$50 maybe.

But, I'd prefer the simplicity of getting this one rebuilt and just reinstalling it.

...in thinking about this, I believe I'll pull it out and see if it responds to the same repairs we do to the dead VDO odometers on old diesels. Nothing to loose.

Well,I am a Certified Master Horologist....

Most cable-driven gauges are either magnetic or inertia-governor operated.

Be very happy to look at it for you and give you my opinion as I rebuild early Clocks,Speedos and other vintage car gauges, and if I CAN'T do it I know who can.

Mistress has my address and number.

On the 1/100000000000000000000000000000000 chance that Carleton or his contacts can't fix it, check Hemmings Motor News for more folks to baffle.

Carleton,
Thank you for the offer. I'll remove the offending unit this weekend and report back on Monday. For the record, it is the odometer-style numbers that aren't advancing. The analog pointer for speed/RPM is OK.

What year JD? Got an Unstyled A and an Allis Chalmers U orchard tractor plus a Farmall 12 rigged with a belly mower for heavy grass and silage.

Sequential drum odometer types have a right angle worm drive, most of 'em,generally there is a fault in the engagement, could be wear or the pivot points have too much play but as I said, there's nothing can't be fixed.

Have you checked Valu-Built and/or Steiner Tractor Parts ?
That’s where most of the parts for our ‘47 Farmall Cub come from. They both cover all the lines.
Steiner can probably cover you, or tell you where to go for the correct part. Very nice folks there.
(Though I wouldn’t call a 2040 “vintage” when you talk to them.)

Have you been to tractorhouse.com ? We’ve had luck with used items from them as well. Just type in the 2040. Select John Deere. And it will give you a list of salvage yards with 2040 parts, if used is OK with you.

The folks at SSB Tractor are helpful at times, too.

Also - Go to the ATIS (Antique Tractor Internet Service at ATIS.net) site and see where that might lead you. (Though a 2040 isn’t an antique either.)

There are quite a few good tractor forums out there that we go to in times of need. Haven’t been let down yet.

Got a part number ?? (and a 2040 S/n?)

Replacement PN - AR65445
note says: SUB FOR AT20641 OR AR5095

I thought I had access to the SN but, no. I'll have it this weekend.

Thanks for the leads!

It may be corrosion since there's been moisture on the underside of the glass since I bought the tractor two years ago....

While we're at it...

How about a tach cable for a MF203 "Work Bull".

Or, the steering clutch/brake adjustment proceedure for a JD450 crawler.

Better yet... a JD450 service manual.
