Computer help

So here's what happened..

New monitor- hp

Downloaded correct drivers from HP site, and ran exe files.

Was informed (by window) that drivers had been installed.

Uninstalled old drivers.

now I get NO picture after windows boots up. I DO get picture during the startup process- CAN go into BIOS.

I suspect I uninstalled what was actually the only working driver for the monitor.

Now the problem is that i get nothing, so I am not sure how to troubleshoot.

Will not go into safe mode- just a list of drivers and such pop up.

Any experts ever heard of somthing like this?

After you boot in Safe Mode how long do you wait after the drivers pop up?

Have you tried the system restore feature ? You can do that from the command prompt.

I waited for a few minutes after the list of drivers popped up.

Have not tried system restore.

I tried to start in safe mode w/ command prompt and got the same thing - list of drivers.

Should I wait longer?

Thanks.

It should not take more than a few minutes YMMV, use the command promt system restore feature and you should be good to go.

Did you try the old monitor again?

There is where you went wrong, one thing Winders does do fairly well is installing new hardware and drivers let it do it don't do anything manually.

I did try the old monitor- same thing.

I will try and wait longer to see if it goes into safe mode w CP.

If this does not work can I use the windows XP install disk or a recovery disk?

Thanks.

Start the System Restore tool at a command prompt

loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');1.Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in Safe Mode with a command prompt.

For additional information about the Safe mode with a command prompt, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 315222 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222/) A description of the Safe mode boot options in Windows XP
2.Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.3.Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
4.Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.

No dice.

Will not go into safe mode. List of drivers just sits there for hours...

I tried both SM and SM with command prompt.

Any ideas?

Go to bootdisk.com and download the windows xp boot disk. Burn it to CD or DVD and boot of it. At the prompt, type c:/windows/system/inf. Locate the monitor drivers and delete them. Reboot without installing drivers and let windows plug and play the drivers for you. You should be good to go.

Thanks powerpig.

Could you give me slightly more detailed instructions.

Will I have any monitor drivers left? I figured no, since I get no picture?

If you`re running XP, you shouldn`t need monitor drivers. The monitor should plug and play. Video adapter drivers are a whole different ballgame.

If you get no picture at all from the time the computer flashes with the Dell screen or HP manufacturer screen with the memory test referred to as the POST (power on self test) screen then you have a video card problem. I would check it for being seated properly. If it's not soldered to the board remove it and reseat it and screw it down to the case and see if you get some sort of activity on the monitor. Even with no operating system or drivers installed you should get two colors and or 16 colors at the very worst when running XP.
