What do you think of this for a first tatoo?
My grandma passed away almost a year to this day. She was very big on family and knew everyone you were distantly related to twice removed and all that stuff. Im all German in ancestry and wanted to get something having to do with my family. I think I remember my grandma saying my great great great grandparents came over in 1865 or 1866. I asked my grandpa but he doesnt remember stuff like that like my grandma did.
My grandparents are like a second set of parents to me and my grandpas starting to get up there now. And I want something to remember them. I was looking at 2 flags, either this or one that is almost identical to the one used today. Both were from right before my family came over Below is my last name. Just wondering what you guys think. |

Very Teutonic-looking. You could have that across your chest, just don't shave your head and don all black clothing. That might be a bit too much.

Sorry about your grandma. What matters most is that you like it enough to keep it. A design with that much black won't take a coverup well at all. Also, make sure you place it so it can be added to later, as most who get a tattoo end up getting more sooner or later.
I started with a Harley Davidson eagle and banner when I was 17 and had it covered up 2 years ago (34) with a half sleeve of a phoenix with flames and a cross. I was limited to design options that covered the old one and it took about 10 visits to complete, not like the shows on TV where you walk in and leave with a full back piece. Another thing to consider, if you get the yellow be prepared to have several trips to the tattoo shop to get the yellow dense enough. It took 3 sittings with 2 weeks of healing between each sitting to get my flames yellow enough. I've been told that yellow is a color that needs touch-ups every few years to keep it saturated and lack of sunscreen use accelerates this. Mine is still fine. My opinion of your design is this. Just get the birds, don't get the shield and put the name in a banner or arch above or below the birds. And get the birds done in a realistic black and grey style that won't be solid black. Just my two cents.

I dont even have any idea how much a tatoo like that would cost. I want it on my right upper arm and I want it an inch and a half to 2 inches wide or so

What you want would be done for about $100 in my area. The size you are thinking of getting may be too small for the detail even as a solid black. If you get it that small, in 10 years or less it will fuzz as all tattoos do and the detail will be lost into a mass of black. That was one of the issues I had with my first. If you decide to do it, get it large enough to hold the detail over time or alter your design to work with the size you want. The artist you choose should be willing to work with you to get what you want or keep looking for one that will.

Over time, I predict the tattoo will change from a double-headed eagle to a double-headed flamingo.

Sorry to hear about your Oma.
See if you can find out where they came from over there - there are quite a few varieties of eagles - you might find one that you like more. Genealogy sites might be of some use....you never know who has done some reseach in your tree.

Might want to consider a Prussian flag - they have a nice eagle too.

Engel.means angel I conclude.
I was practically raised by my Grandparents and while I chose not to demean their memory with any body defacement it's strictly a matter of personal choice. What I DO have is a wealth of memories, sound advice and common sense plus the wisdom of my Gramp's own experience which was never pedantic or forced, but delivered in a mordant,off-hand manner which left all the more impression. Never a day passes when I do not recall his loving tutelage.

Not to mention a plethora of interesting stories, a huge vocabulary, and a wealth of wisdom, anecdotes, and funny stories. I like the accent, too.
