Got 30mpg in my 99 E430
Just returned from a long weekend in Montreal. Filled up just as we were getting on the highway. It's about 330 miles from Toronto to Montreal, mostly flat and traffic is not too bad once you're out of the city. Had the cruise on about 70 most of the way up and the same on the way back today. Didn't make it all the way there and back on a single tank, but here are my stats for the fill up on the way back.
Distance between fill ups 879.7km - 546.6 miles Fuel consumed - 69 Litres - 18.2 gallons Comsumption 9.2l/100km or 30mpg. I thought that was pretty decent for a 9 year old car with a "thirsty V8" in it. I know this doesn't compare well with the diesel or Smart car crowd, but I was pleased with it. |
Well, that would be factoring in the imperial gallon. Using American gallons it would come out to 26 mpg.
Still pretty good for a 4.3 liter V8 engined car weighing almost 2 tons.:) |
If those are canadian liters... I think it's us gallons... 18.27 so 29.91 mpg ... close enough.
|
Not bad at all, who says 8 bangers are pigs. Even the new Corvette's get mid 20's,
I can get 23mpg with the cruise set at 75 in the S600. Did it when I drove it home from Chicago last summer. |

A liter is a liter, but a gallon isn't necessarily a gallon. I think a US gallon is 3.7855 litres, which is the figure I used to convert.

So, 9.2 / 3.7855 = gallons per 100 km... Figure is 2.43 gallons per 100 km. There are 62.1 miles per 100 km. So, 62.1 / 2.43.... ...The answer is: 25.55 mpg. |
Thats pretty good, best I ever get out of my diesel SDL is just south of 28mpg. These days a Z06 can match that!:D
The nice thing about the diesel, if I run it hard around town the mileage is still 22! Try running a V8 like that, you would get 15! |
I got 9mpg in my 300TE driving hard in the city...
My 400E cruised all day long at 80mph and craked 28.5 mpg. |

Something isn't hanging together here. The 69 liters/879.7 km = 7.84 l / 100km not 9.2/100km. The miles and liters you quote would indeed give you the 30 mpg which honestly is hard to believe but that is what the numbers say. On the other hand as pointed out above the 9.2/100 km is around 26 mpg which is more in line with expectations. So what are the raw numbers you used? |
26...30...whatever...still impressive for a V8.
I'm still trying to top 21 mpg on the ML350...in VAIN I might add!! |
I have noticed the same thing with my 430 - impressive mileage for a V8. If I drive hard in the city, the mileage drops accordingly. However, cruising on the highway, I'll get close to the same mileage as the V6 of the same vintage, around 9-10L/100Km.

You're right, it should have been 7.8l/100km. I keep a spreadsheet that I update everytime I fill up and it says 7.8 (I copied off the wrong line when I typed in 9.2). For further info, the worst milleage I've gotten from a tank was 15.2mpg from a tank that was all city driving in the dead of winter. My average is 21.5mpg since the beginning of 2006. |
Nice..... I have been considering a S430 and one the reasons is its exceptional (for a big car) mileage.

I think I got about 28 mpg once with my '97 E420 with average speeds ranging from 70 - 75 mph. Usually I got about 25 - 26 mpg around that speed. |
