Hey why not? Those low compression engines are perfect for turbocharging. You just have to add an external oil cooler.

There's a turbocharged 4 banger VW drag racing. Hitting nice numbers too.

saw a sweet 52 zwitter at bug jam last year with a big T4 on it.. I do believe it had a Porsche swap..
but the flat 4's can handle the boost |

Eh, they aren't terribly long lived engines anyways, probably 100K per rebuild right?

I know of a guy with a turbo bug running 28# of boost that runs sub 6 second 1/8 miles.

1300/1500/1600 can be built to take it but you can bet the ones that last have forged counterweighted cranks, forged rods and forged pistons. 25-40 HP are best left alone. That didn't stop EMPI and Okrasa (sp?).

Vintage turbo setups DID indeed exist (as previously mentioned...Okrasa) for the 36 and 40-horse motors.
VW pancake motors, though reliable, required a lot of tweaking when you added performance parts (ask me how I know)...

I was watchin some show on TV where they put in some sortof 130HP crate motor into an old beetle and it was lifting the front tires easily at the drag strip. Granted there isn't much weight up front, but still...
Gotta love light weight cars!

There is a guy here locally that has a baja bug with a turbo from an old VW Quantum.

IIRC, Judson used to offer a supercharger for the old 36/40hp engines. A flat four with counterbalances welded onto the stock forged crank (all stock VW cranks were forged) can really wind. Back in the day, I built a 1641cc Type III dual Weber engine that I had dynamically balanced, prior to assembly. That baby was torn down at 75k, and had no appreciable wear, whatsoever.

This is about as extreme a mod as I've seen -
http://www.almar.easynet.be/Old_VW_engine.jpg Picture is blurry but the arrangement siameses piston pairs so one cylinder supercharges the other. IIRC that's an integrated starter and generator at the far end. Looks like a roller bearing crank, too. Sixto 87 300D |
