GM develops diesel-like gasoline engine called homogenous charge compression ignition

Specifically, the system uses high pressure to increase burn efficiency to levels only achieved in diesel engines until now.

Diesel engines are up to 30 per cent more efficient than gas engines but create more emissions - making HCCI an attractive goal. Stephens said the technology will not be sold until at least 2013.

Everyone is developing these engines. The main problem is the amount of processing power needed to control them.

Dont fret kids, we'll all be driving compression engines runing on beans grown by ADM in twenty years. Dont let the dying gasps of gasoline technology fool you into thinking otherwise. Then there is helium 3 technology.

if it doesn't burn fossil fuels, I'm not driving it.
as this technology progresses, the ability *?* for customization and "owner improvement" gets smaller. THAT will be the death of the car hobby.

If there was enough emphasis on the HCCI I am entirely confident American automakers (with institutional and corporate cooperation) could resolve the processor problem.

The question is are we going to get there in time before the Japanese government, Toyota, and Honda do?

my dad had an oldsmobile diesel, the delta 88 way back when, we were very glad when it got stolen but then the police found it. my dad said the only diesel to buy was a Mercedes diesel.

Diesel fuel is denser than gasoline (has 15% more energy for the same volume) and when you level the playing field on that factor, diesels are about 20% more efficient. Diesels engines are heavier (stouter) to withstand the rigors of high compression, and they have lower power output than a gas engine of the same size. The rule of thumb used to be a turbo diesel had the same HP as a gas engine of the same size. They also run at slower speeds than gas engines.

There are always tradeoffs.
