1968 International gas V8

I'm looking at an old dump truck to use at the ranch. Seller says it has a V8 but did not know the displacement. I've found 266, 304 345 and 392s with 345 being the most popular. He claims three yrs ago it had a overhaul due to a cracked piston skirt. Sounds legit to me.
Any way to tell the displacement? I have no knowledge of old International engines. What to look for???

Anyone here familiar with these old beast? Any web sites?

Also, it has a 75 gallon saddle tank almost full of old gas. I'm wondering if there is some additive I could use and just run it. Getting rid of that much old gas may be a problem.

This may help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Harvester_Scout#Engines

Either a 266, or a 304 (not AMC)

I had a late 60's Travelall ambulance. It was 27 years ago, but my recollection is that it had a 288CI engine. (maybe it was a 266 and I'm just recalling the 6's as 8's). I also recall the engine being very similar to the larger displacement engines of the same period.
I have a distinct memory of comparing the weight of a head of the International engine with a head off a Ford 390 and the International was in a different league altogether.
I'm curious about the gas issue too. I pulled about 10 gallons of old gas out of a Travco motorhome and decided the easiest way to get rid of it was to let it slowly evaporate. Got rid of only about 5 gallons that way.

Yes, I have owned a 63 1/2 ton, and a 66 3/4 ton 4x4 pickups, both with 304 ci and both were awesome torque builders. The 345 ci engines generally went into school buses, and 2 ton flat beds. I think these engines could easily qualify as bullet proof! I remember doing a lifter replacement on the 1963 1/2 ton, after that it could burn rubber more easily than any vehicle, short of the 59 Chrysler I tortured back in the sixties!

Those international v8s are very very high quality. When in good tune they idle so smoothly I wouldn't be surprised if you can stand a nickel on the engine. Very high tolerances and must be well balanced too.

They will run forever....as long as you can afford the gas to fill them.

Getting rid of old gas is a b!tch. I have taken a gallon at a time if it isn't too gummy and put it in my cars and run it off.

I could find NOBODY who would take it. I once dumped some down the sewer simply because I couldn't find anyone to take it.

My 66 scout snow plower has a half of one as a four cylinder....rated at about 90 hp, iirc. 177 ci iirc.

i beg to differ.DO NOT over rev these engines.my dad converted an old 59 a160 bus into a camper and pulled the 6 and 4sd and added a 345 with an fmx ford trans.it ran great and loved running 50-55mph.but turn over 60 and it would break teeth on the cam gear.happened 3 different times.just came to the conclusion that it didn't like the 60's so kept it under 60 and never had any more problems.

I've still got about 3 gallons left and haven't figured out what to do with it. Burn it in a fire??

I poured about a gallon of old gas onto the weedy strip down the middle of my gravel driveway and carefully set it on fire. I got rid of a bunch of the weeds and the old gas with one stroke. All the volatiles were long gone at that point, and it burned more like lighter fluid.

Jeezus! Do NOT dump it down a sewer! Aside from ecological issues, gasoline fumes in a sewer is an excellent way to light up an entire neighborhood!

I once tried to burn away some old gas/2 cycle mix in the back yard of my house. The police were there in 8.3 seconds due to the black smoke. The neighbors thought my house was going up.

It's a '68 IH Loadstar 1600 dump truck with a 4 spd + 2 spd axle. It appears, from what I can find online, that most of them have the 345 CI V8. It holds 9qts of oil and as stated they are noted for being very smooth running.

I have a '66 Chev C60 2ton dump that we used around the ranch for yrs but it's in need of brakes, drive shaft support bearings and a new bed floor. I can pick up the IH Loadstar for about what it will cost to get the old chev going.

Plus, it just looks really cool.

Had a 78 Scout II, put almost 100K on it and never had to touch the engine itself. It was a 5.7 Liter with a 4 speed manual.

The electronics were a pain until I had an external unit installed on the firewall.

The body wasn't rust proof ... tough luck

This is what my BIL the fireman suggested. I was too chicken though.

This was fifteen years ago. I neither recommend it or would do it today. I was just trying to illustrate how hard it is to properly find someone to take it.
