Is Anyone Familiar With the People To People Student Ambassador Programs!

My 9.5 yo son was invited to take part in the People To People Student Ambassador program. It's essentially a 2-3 week travel abroad program that gives kids hands-on learning opportunities as they immerse themselves in the arts, sports and family life of cultures around the world.

High School and college kids can get transferable credits, but for elementary and junior high students it's more of a learning opportunity.

We looked into it, but it turns out he's too young. He was invited to attend the orientation meetings to see if he would be interested in doing it next year. We're kind of apprehensive and not sure we'd let him do it. He is book smart, common-sense is another matter.

Has anyone here had a kid take part in it or do it themselves? It does seem like a great opportunity.

I know 2 people who have exchanged with other children. Taken a stranger into the home. Both times it was a great experience for all.
Both times it was done through a Church. I don't know if I would do it any other way.

I went to Australia and New Zealand as part of a P2P trip back in 1995, it was a great experience but I wish I had been older, I dont think I appreciated it as much as I would have now. I was 12 at the time.

I went to the orientation a few years ago with my youngest. Experience wise it looks like a great program. My turn offs were
1. Initially they make it sound like there is little or no cost to get you in the door.
2. It's not cheap
3. They give you ideas on how to raise money BUT they are not a NPO they are a for profit company so sponsors don't get a tax break.
4. The most sickening thing they encouraged people attending to borrow from their 401K's to pay for this.
5. Orientation is a well orchestrated infomercial

A funny note during the proceding is they will ask the child attending to help Mom or Dad and get form # X Y Z and fill in their name, parents name and address and check the box YES my son/daughter will be attending please charge my credit card #________ the deposit. It was priceless to see the parents cringe on that one. Real closers these people could move right into the time share business

(that was supposed to be a ? and not a ! in the title )

Wow, that didn't take long! Thanks for the experiences, guys. I'm not going to blow it off carte-blanch, I've just got the parental jitters.

Johnhef and Dee8go-good point about the age. I'm not sure he'd appreciate it nearly as much at 10 or 11 as he would later on.

My sister did a Europe one when she was a sophomore in high school I believe... a friend of hers actually went with her and they had a blast. I remember it being expensive, but I think she got a lot out of it since she was older when she went.

I was going to do it, but didn't. I'd wait until he is like 14 or 15, he'd probably get more out of it.

Never heard of the P2P programs, but as someone who traveled abroad a lot as a kid and did an exchange through school, I think a lot of the learning is wasted on kids. Juniors or Seniors in high school are about the only kids who might get much out of the trip.
I know I regret the fact I was young when I did most of my travel. I learned alot, but I would've gotten so much more out of it if I were older.

Thanks for all of the input. Many of my thoughts were confirmed by your responses. It's probably a great opportunity that we'll probably take advantage of at some point. When he's old enough to appreciate it.
