Computer Purchase Help- WHICH MAC DO I BUY?

Gentlemen- i have to buy a MAC for work to do video and graphics work on. Which one would you suggest- a "G" or the new IMAC?

I would get a "G". Any of them are capable. I have a 1.6 GHz PowerPC G5 with 1.25 GB DDR SDRAM, 80GB Hard Drive and 500GB external Firewire drive. It is a few years old now and still handles everything with ease. I've done video editing, Photoshop, InDesign, Quark, Illustrator, etc. in the Electronic Pre-press and Graphic Design field for 17 years and do stained/fused glass and mosaic design on MAC and Windows.

I personally stay away from the iMacs for the same reason I don't buy TV's with a VCR or DVD player built into it. Plus they aren't as upgradeable/expandable. They will probably be OK if you have to stick to a tight budget, but the "G" will be a better long term option IMO.

Good luck!

The old G's are still good and will be good for a few more years. But it's like buying a w126, Mistress. It's a great ride but do you want to buy it for work?

Get the new Intel-based machines. That's where Apple is moving. Get the highest-end most RAM-loaded you can afford. Get a big screen.

I was raised in the neighborhood that gave birth to the "Portugese Love Machine," aka the muscle car- I was the test driver for the modifications my brother and his friends made on their cars- I miss it. The most incredible machines 68 GTO, 69 Roadrunner, Corvette with a 327 bored out to a 331 with 11 and 1/4 to 1 compression.

No, you have to have a halon gas system installed in your studio. It does, however come with an asbestos Moon suit to protect the operator from the intense heat . . .

Don't buy a G5 (it's the past), in the computer world you buy the best that fit's your budget. For editing go with the Intels, all new and up coming software will be written for it. Final Cut will be flying with the 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 16 gig of ram and so will CS3.
