________________________________________________________________
Dear Prospective Partner,
My name is Jerry Azfar , I trained and work as an external auditor for the Bank of Singapore (BOS), working as part of a bigger team that covers the entire Asian region. I had taken pains to find your contact through a random web search using the deceased surname.

On routine audit check last year, I discovered some investment accounts that had been dormant for at least twelve years. All the accounts belong to a single/one account holder with monies totalling a little above 10.5 million United States Dollars. Now banking regulation/legislation in Singapore demand that I do notify the fiscal authorities after a statutory time span of twelve years when dormant accounts of this type are called in by the Singapore Monetary Regulatory bodies.

The above set of facts underscores my reason of writing and proposing to you. My investigations of the said account reveals that the investor, an American had died in 1994-the exact time the account was last operated. I can confirm with certainty that the said investor died interstate and no next -of -kin to his estate has been found or has come forward all these years.

I am of the settled conviction that using my insider leverage, I, working with you can secure the funds in the account for us instead of allowing it pass as unclaimed funds into the coffers of the Government of Singapore . This is especially possible as you bear the same LAST NAME to the said investor. This exactly is why I crave your participation and co-operation. I am seized with all relevant documents (legal and Banking) that will facilitate our putting you forward as the claimant/beneficiary of the funds and ultimately transfer the money to an account to be nominated by you.

Of course you shall be handsomely rewarded for your part in this transaction as the people I am working with are prepared to allocate a 20% slice of the total funds for your efforts.

I shall however leave out the final details of this transaction till I receive an affirmation of your desire to participate. Rest assured that I am on top of the situation all the time and there will be no risk whatsoever if you elect to come on board. Needless to say, UTMOST CONFIDENTIALITY is of vital importance if we are to successfully reap the immense benefits of this transaction.

Find above written email contact that you may reach me with,I do expect your response. God bless.

Truly ,

Jerry Azfar

I've gotten 3 in less than a week from 1 craigslist post.

tvpierce 10-06-2007 05:54 AM

I got one the other day from a moron posing as a US Army soldier who stated he had come across a stash of millions of dollars in cash in a raid of a mansion in Iraq... and wanted my help laundering the money. The funniest part of it was that it was written in such broken English that it was strikingly apparent that this "American soldier" was not even a fluent in the language. (clearly a real genious)

Jim B. 10-06-2007 06:10 AM

You should go for it, the money would buy you whole lot of dog food or a Lamborghini:ukliam3:

SwampYankee 10-06-2007 08:29 AM

You lucky dog, you! Cha-ching!

No kidding.

Take one, and Cut and Paste it to a new MS Word page and watch it light up like a Christmas tree !!

Our record here in the office is (I think) eight of these type scams in one day.
Most were those: “Hey, we need your eBay/PayPal/Bank/CC – Account information to service your account or you will loose it all together in three days if you don’t…..” Oh sure…Here ya go.
(Click on that link they provide you and Norton Securities will start ringing all kinds of warning bells and whistles at you.)

I still can’t figure out who they are trying to fool. But, I guess there are some folks out there that are that --------.

MS Fowler 10-06-2007 09:09 AM

So whats wrong with me? I have never even recieved even one of these scams. Is my money not good enough for them?

Brian Carlton 10-06-2007 12:40 PM

Would it amaze you if you found out that 1 out of 3 people fall for these scams?

I find that unbelievable..........but, the stupidity of the public should never be underestimated.

The reason they continue is that the return rate is very high.

No. Actually it wouldn’t amaze me at all. It would scare the hell out of me.

I don’t only find it unbelievable…….But, a frightening (as well as disgusting) fact about the people around me.

Count me in as one of the underestimating. Or “past-underestimaters” as I may now be.

I guess I’ve got to quit thinking so highly of those in the world around me.

catmandoo62 10-06-2007 02:33 PM

its all about the money these days.just like the guy that found a leg in the smoker he bought.instead of doing the right thing and giving it back to the rightful owner.he wants to make money off of it.

cmac2012 10-06-2007 02:38 PM

Hey Carleton, if you don't want to go for it, could you forward it to me?

No but hey, what amazes me is that the people who actually forward tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to these characters acutally managed to accumulate those kinds of funds.

One wonders if dead beat heirs squandering daddy's hard earned money feature prominently among the ranks.

Well, I've never thought highly of those in the world around me because they continually prove quite the opposite.

The average person is a moron.

I dunno, but I have a standard cut'n paste reply that I've used for the Nigerian scam artists.

Dears Sirs or Madam,
I am liking of your proposal but due to Unted States American banking export curncy laws I need first you'r information of your' financial institute, this will keep all transaction legal but discreet.
Kindly forward me the proper name of your banque and follow with account number and then please routing number of account in whitch these money's are held pending my agreement to your proposal so I and my banque can facalitate the neccesary transfer of the funds you have indicated.
Awaiting your reply,Carl LaFong

Funny,I never hear from the same ones after that:(

cmac2012 10-06-2007 02:58 PM

I can't imagine why. Seems very proper to me.

The Swede 10-06-2007 03:11 PM

My part-time employee will soon be entering a police academy, so went on a police ride along the other day.

They picked up a well dressed Nigerian fellow at a local bank on suspicion of check fraud. They took him in, he refused to talk and when the cop was looking away he took a piece of paper out of his pocket and swallowed it. (My guess it was his boss's 411) Apparently the guy had no record and iirc, he was merely sent back to Nigeria.

Hatterasguy 10-06-2007 03:41 PM

Its amazing people fall for this stuff. I get a couple of them a day, but the good old Google spam filter catch's most. Damn that spam filter is smart.:D

These guys are pretty dumb, would it kill them to run the email through a program like MS Word before sending it? You would think they would at least make an effort to come across as American, or professional as the case may be. But I guess the people that buy this crap are dummer.

They probably couldn't understand what they are trying to type any more than if you were to write an e-mail in Russian or Portuguese. Even with a spell checker, they still wouldn't get the grammar correct or know what the proper words are for the situation.

Example, I got this one after listing my computer on craigslist last week.
Quote:

Hi seller,
How are you today? I saw the advert for your item on craigslist and I'm interested in buying it,please let me know if the item is still available for sale and how much will be your best offer.
I wait to read from you asap.Thank you.
Nobody in the USA uses the word "advert" and "how much will be your best offer" does not make any sence at all since the seller does not offer a price.

Seriously, people fall for such obvious scams?

Mistress 10-06-2007 04:03 PM

Shouldn't the closing salutation be "Allah bless?" Now onto our regularly schedule program.

Dee8go 10-06-2007 04:04 PM

or "Die imperialist, decadent Yanqui pigs!"

vegadonovan 10-06-2007 06:31 PM

You guys are funny!:P

I notice you got the Bank stated as Bank of Singapore.

People in asia get those from Bank of England and such.

They have some intelligence after all.:sombrero:

Classic.

MS Fowler 10-07-2007 09:16 AM

The success of these scams is based on the GREED of the typical person.

Looking Brian Calrton's signature line, " The average person is a moron", got me thinking..... Half of the people are below average.
Except here on OD and in Lake Woebegon where, as we all know, "...all the children are above avaerage"

ada1726 10-07-2007 04:12 PM

How very sad..all of the above. Now, as a solid American senior looking to that great showroom in the sky I am very pleased to offer you my interest in a certain Bridge in a large East cost city. Simply post your full name and address, SS number and Bank name or send a check ( Cash will do it) to my address, in the small amount of $25 buck-a-roos. Said address held by web-master on a commision base. This will give you all the information you will need. Be Rich In A Year!!! Jambo17

rickg 10-07-2007 06:19 PM

I got one of those a couple yars ago. I had an old junk tractor I posted on a old junk tractor web site, offering it as a non-running parts tractor, for free. This moron writes to me claiming to be a purchaser of agriculture equipment for his village, and wanted to know "the condition and price" of my tractor!:confused: I actually wrote back, after his second email, knowing it was a scammer, and told the idiot "as stated in the posting, it's a non-running parts tractor, for free".
Never heard from him again.
Not only do they think we're all stupid, but they're even STUPIDER!(is that a word?):D
