why do the british call frenchmen frogs?

This came up at lunch today.

I thought maybe it was because the french used to have these toilets which you have to squat at but I googled it and found two reasons:

one that they were reputed to eat frogs

two because the british took the gold fleur de lis (sP?) to be a gold frog when spotted on their battle flags.

anybody feel qualified to say why for sure?

Any brits out there?

'used to have'? They still have them,,, absolutely disgusting,,,,mind you, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway still has bathroom stalls without doors in some of the Gents bathrooms. Not sure how some of these Hoosiers were brought up, but I'd rather soil myself than wipe my arse in full view of 200 drunk race fans who are lining up to take a p1ss 3 feet away. Funny,,, I never noticed Tony George in those bathrooms.

Aaaanyway,,,,, French,,, Frogs,,,,For me it was always because they ate frogs legs I guess,,,never really thought about it. I believe the English dislike for the French may now be on a genetic level.

I went to school there for ten years, I believe it was because of the frog legs. If there is another meaning its been long lost in modern British culture. Besides "Frogs" rolled off the tongue a lot easier than calling them French

We race against a French team. On the start line as we are trying to time the line very often they seemed to follow us....so now we "croak" at them, or "ribbit". They take it very well, and still favor our side of the start.

Everyone has nick names. We have the frogs who follow us, and Hamas. Those are the two favorites. "Hamas" is extremely loud, you hear them before you see them. They are Greek and very "passionate", in a vocal way. We were sailing with a guy from Argentina he thought it sounded funny, so it stuck. Then we have "grumpy", "doc", "porn guy", and "serious". Boats and their crews kind of need nick names. Oh and "Bruce" don't get in front of Bruce he will run you down right of way be damned!

Actually I always thought the squatter toilets were pretty comfortable to use. YOu have to be careful though not to drag your pants on the "floor" and not drop things in them either.

If we had them we would have a much lower incidence of hemroids I am sure.

I don't know, Tom. I don't think I could really enjoy reading the paper while squatting in one of those.

I always figured the Brits called them frogs because they didn't like them . . .

The French did not surrender in ww1. They died in droves and lost almost two complete genereations of men in the trenches against the much larger more populous germans.

At the beginning of ww2 they had so few men that a long war was not feasible for them. The brits were similarly low on men of fighting age.

Don't believe all the propoganda that our pols offer up to sway public opinion.

Last time I was in France I took a tour of a medieval castle that had a sit down toilet. I've never seen a Turkish toilet in any trip to France. Plenty in Inida though. They are good endurance builders if you're constipated.

I thought it was because they pioneered scuba diving, and therefore were referred to as frogs. (with the fins on, a human resembles a frog)
