Anyone here adopt f/another country?
We're thinking about it again.
I'd rather adopt a kid from a foster home, toddler age. Adopting from abroad is mighty expensive (yeah I know, you can't put a price on love)

3 families I know have adopted abroad. 2/3 got an unexpected shakedown prior to leaving the country of their adoptive kids. Cost them a good deal for travel permits and exit papers, etc. The one with no problems was from China. The problem children were from Honduras and Ethiopia.

I know one couple who has adopted 2 girls from China.
It is controlled by the Chinese government through approved agencies. There is a lot of paperwork, but there is no corruption and was fairly painless. It takes about 6 months from the time you start until you get the baby. You can do an internet search to find the agency that is closest to you. They handle the whole process for you AFAIK.

The ones who did adopt the girl have started the foster to adopt program with hopes of adopting another child here. The only scary part of the fostering to adoption aspect is that the birth parents/mother has up to 2 years to decide they want their child back. Don't quote me on that but it was a fairly long "trial" period. Good luck with whatever route you decide to take!

China seems to be the quickest, Paul's story is typical. Mighty expensive.
My thinking is that there are a lot of kids in need here in the US, so why not stay local (?)

My wife and I adopted three girls that we fostered here in Georgia.
It is usually the easiest transition to foster kid's with the possibility of adoption, but it does not always end up that way. Sometimes the kids go back in and out of foster care until the judge drops the hammer on the so called (parents) of theese kids. In my case it was a real roller coaster ride for the poor kids and all the false promises from their crack head biological mom, until she screwed up bad and went to jail for four years. She finally gave up her parental rights. Just recently , our oldest adopted daughter graduated high school and her scum bag bio-Mom showed up at the graduation ceremony uninvited and attempted to confront (my) daughter with a band of scuzz balls that she brought with her. My daughter said "Get away from me, I don't know why you would come here and try to ruin everything the only real parents I ever had worked so hard for." The ex-mom got in her face and her scum bag boyfriend puffed up his chest and started walking closer. I told him, "One more step, and I'm gonna drop you like a bad habit!" He put his hands up and told the 'ol lady "I think it's time we dun better go." My daughter was devastated. It really brought back alot of bad memories seeing that lady again since that scuzz ball let every man that was in her life, including their biological father rape those girls for years. I swear, that was the closest I ever came to actually killing a person. I guess that's one down side to adopting locally huh? Sorry for the rant. |

Thanks for the reply cuda.
I figured a foster kid would (or could) bring a lot of baggage. The crack-head parents are never too far away...

Wow Cuda, what a horror for your kid. You raised a keeper, despite the way she started. Good job.

One of my cousins was adopted from some easter European country when she was a baby. I was to young to remember much.
Of all the countries mentioned, I'd rather deal with the Chinese system.

A doctor that I know got a little girl from China and are very happy with the reslults. I believe they are considering another.
They went over to the orphanage to pick her up and even though the two ladies in charge of 200 kids at the orpahage (or so) were overworked they felt they cared for the babies because they cried when they left with the little girl. There are no boys to adopt in China because they want them to work. With the one child rules baby girls are given up or in rural areas quietly exterminated. Tom W

US orphanages are brimming with children in need of homes, my wife volunteers for few of them during her spare time. I suggest to stick to the adage that Charity begins at home and take a look at the adaption scene here as well.

The question then is why they do go overseas. Is it an age or race issue?
