Washington state man uses shotgun to remove lug nut

SOUTHWORTH, Wash. — A man trying to loosen a stubborn lug nut blasted the wheel with a 12-gauge shotgun, injuring himself badly in both legs, sheriff’s deputies said.

The 66-year-old man had been repairing a Lincoln Continental for two weeks at his home northwest of Southworth, about 10 miles southwest of Seattle, and had gotten all but one of the lug nuts off the right rear wheel by Saturday afternoon, Kitsap County Deputy Scott Wilson said.

“He’s bound and determined to get that lug nut off,” Wilson said.

From about arm’s length, the man fired the shotgun at the wheel and was “peppered” in both legs with buckshot and debris, with some injuries as high as his chin, according to a sheriff’s office report.

“Nobody else was there and he wasn’t intoxicated,” Wilson said.:beer:

The man was taken to Tacoma General Hospital with injuries Wilson described as severe but not life-threatening.

That was good just the facts, maybe he didn't realize that it is better to use a 20 gauge when shooting off lug nuts. :D

I remember a teacher telling us once that when he was a teenager, he was out shooting his 22 and came upon something secured by a padlock that he wanted to look into. Of course, he'd seen people shoot off locks on TV many times, everybody knows it works, so he shot the lock.

The bullet ricocheted up and hit him in the eye. He said it must have slowed down enough to save him cause it didn't penetrate. He didn't realize this for several minutes cuz the eye was tearing so profusely, he thought he'd lost it for sure.

A shotgun should only be used to adjust a stuck outside mirror!:smart:

I wonder if that ol' boy might try to use a blowtorch to just heat up that lug nut next time?

Now he will probably sue the tire outfit that over-torqued the lugs. :)

I suppose he's never heard of a good old 6-foot cheater on the end of a quality breaker bar.

Yeah, I'm amazed he didn't douse the whole wheel with gasoline first to "loosen up" that lug nut. That would have been pretty entertaining to watch . . .from a safe distance.

There are some hip and groovy spots in Washington (lived there for 23 or so years) but there are places here and there that remind me of a west coast version of Appalachia.

You run into some real backwoods good ol' boys now and then, even living close to the urban centers.

Stupidity does not seem to recognize any geographic boundaries from what I've seen. There is apparently plenty to go around.

Like Ron White says, "You can't fix stupid."

WA state is full of morons like that. I often have to share the road with them.
