Forces of Nature - Ice

Found this cap of water early in the morning after a very cold night in the 20's. I am pondering the science behind this formation protruding from the surface of the water contained in the cap. Yes, freezing water does expand but what other forces, if any, are at work here.

One thought is the rapid freezing of the outer edge forcing the protrusion up.

The next 2 freezing nights the cap just formed a dome top.

The cap was in a different orientation but you didn't see it until after the water froze and by then, the cap was flat?

The cap was in it's current position but when it had a thin film of ice somebody else came along and jammed an icicle through the thin layer and left it to freeze?

A microscopic Black Hole passed through the cap melting the ice which refroze as the Black Hole continued on it's way. Good thing you weren't standing there!

I think #2 is close. An icicle fell or blew into the cap.

Not a chance, no other icicle's present anywhere in the vicinity.

Ask Gene Roddenberry. Looks like the "live water" in one of the earliest Star Trek episodes.

The board looks wet and the cap is obviously full so I'm thinkin that the cap was against the board and during the melting process expansion of the ice moved the cap or a spiderweb that started the process.

of course the Joo's would have had something to do with it.

Nice link. That is exactly what I am talking about. That icicle just grew out and up.

Thanks!

I've seen those spikes on icecubes in the tray in the freezer, too.

Obviously there was a very attractive female cap nearby at the time of freezing!
