Aftermarket Headlights
Hi,
I noticed the other day that when driving my 1991 Toyota Previa,the headlights were very dim.The car has 250,000 miles on it and the headlights are the original ones,so they are very dirty.I was looking on ebay,found some used OEM ones,but they were not as clean as I would like.So,how would the aftermarket headlights be?I was thinking about these.

If the reflector inside the lens is yellowed, there is nothing much to be done but to change the entire assembly.

I will stick to OE in this case, usually either made by Japanese Koito, Stanley or PIAA. The quality difference is significant, specially throw etc.

The OEM ones that I found online are $300.How good are the ebay ones?Do they crack easily or fog up?

The aftermarket ones have a tendency to go opaque way earlier than standard, also lens throw etc. is not good at all.

I would not trust any aftermarket part sight-unseen. I understand that the factory charges a premium for the parts, but sometimes you just have to pay it. Finding an aftermarket headlamp that you can examine before purchase would be impossible.

Are your headlight lenses plastic or glass? I recall our 96 Previa had glass lenses. If so it should be possible to bake the headlights to loosen the lens adhesive then take the headlights apart for cleaning. If the reflectors are anything like MB reflectors, gently blow them clean. Any contact will remove the reflective coating.
Those eBay headlights look nice. If the lenses are glass and you can confirm that they have a US DOT or Euro LHD disperal pattern, I'd take the $50 gamble. Sixto 87 300D

Its an old 250K mile Toyota, get the $25 each cheap lights. They will last a couple of years.

No,the headlights are plastic.I remember looking at a set of glass headlights off of a euro previa.I would like to pair of glass ones,but it would probably be very hard to find.I dont want to buy a cheap pair that will break or fog up quickly because I can assure you that I would never get rid of the car,so I would rather put on some better headlights.I am probably just going to call the dealership,and order a pair.I will ask them if they can get me the glass ones.

If your eye doctor says your eyes are fine you don't need brighter headlights. Some of the aftermarket units are more for show than for performance. The newer cars have headlights and taillights that look like sculpture, works of art. The aftermarket is geared more for looks than for performance. I bought some really beautiful tailights off of eBay and I am going to buy headlights when I get around to it. I like the new ones for the looks compared to the junkyard ones that would be the calculated choice. They cost twice as much but the difference is still very little. The headlights will be more expensive but it is still cheap compared to even one average car payment.
If you want glass, check the JDM (japanese domestic market). A quick look at eBay seems to indicate that the Previa is beyond the realm of art. Last edited by TwitchKitty; 11-25-2007 at 10:47 AM.
