Need to ship a hard top

Well, I found a buyer for my parts geo hard top... It's in better shape then the one I'm using on my daily driver, but im getting 2X what I paid for the parts truck off it... So it's all good

The question is, how do I ship a hard top from wisconsin to ohio... It's about 4 feet wide, 2 feet tall, and mabey 3 feet long... 30lbs or so....

How do I ship this? It's fiberglass, so it could get damaged if crushed or something...

Any ideas? Speed isnt importaint, just getting it there in one piece and cheaply.

Thanks alot
~Nate

Strap it to a pallet. I just sent an entire 4 sp. manual trans, bell housing, drive shaft, etc. to Ca. on a pallet. Know problems. As long as the edges are inboard of the pallet edges and it is secured well I think it will make the trip easily. Since it will be on a pallet there is no tendency to stand it on edge and it will most likely be moved by forklift since no man worth his back will try to move something that big and heavy.

My brother shipped some snakes on a Grayhound bus, their rates are cheap.

I had no idea they ship cargo, but they do. Give them a call.

If speed isnt important when spring starts to hit, drive it down on a weekend. Maybe you could use the money to fund a fun trip.

Otherwise, pack it extremely well and ship it on the Greyhound bus (as mentioned above), provided the recipient will go to the greyhound stop closest to them and pick it up.

Or freight via an enclosed collapsable pallet.

Nate, Greyhound is a decent choice as long as the top isn't too big (I wouldn't think so) and the receiver doesn't mind picking it up at the local Greyhound terminal. If that doesn't work check out freightquote.com. It'll give you a dozen or so different LTL carriers, duration of delivery as well as the price. Strap in on a pallet and send it on its merry way.

I ship tons of stuff all over New England but my carriers are regional and don't go past NY state. I've used freightquote about 20 times in the past 2 years for shipments outside of the northeast and I've had good luck with it. If you do go that route try to see if both you and the receiver have access to a loading dock because you'll save $60-80 on the shipment if you both do.

I tried to ship a Miata hardtop greyhound; they wouldn't take it because it is too big and wont fit in their luggage compartment. (This is what they told me locally. But you may have better luck.) Oh greyhound is the cheapest shipper around period; but you do have to go pick it up at the bus depot.
I ended up driving the Miata with the hard top to a halfway meeting point with the buyer. All went well.

I had 2 amg spoilers bumpers shipped to me via greyhound, so they were in a box 40inches x 60 inches x 15 inches.

Im sure the top is smaller than that.

Go to www.freightquote.com and enter the shipping, receiving and item info. It's kind of like travelocity or priceline for LTL carriers. It will give you a list of all of the companies in their database as well as what the freight charges will be. If you decide to ship the item it's just a matter of clicking on the carrier you want to use and printing out a bill of lading which they will send to you via fax or email.
