Ski Wisp

It's in Western Maryland....near Deep Creek Lake. Anyone ever been there?

It's snowing here in PA and I'm losing my mind. I want to get out on the slopes so bad this year. Gonna try and teach my 7 yr. old to snowboard.

Anywho - we vacationed there (in Deep Creek) this summer, beautiful area - but I just have a hard time imagining decent conditions there?

Skiing is admittedly terrible around here....so before I get flamed from those in REAL ski areas, please understand my perspective. We're happy with 2' packed granular base and high speed quad chairs around here.....

I might take my family over there in Jan/Feb for a short stay....and just curious if it's worth it to even bring my board.

Rent skis if you go because it is 90% man-made with dirt prevalent under the ice patches--watch the sparks fly at night From where you are, I would recommend Stowe or Killington. Shoot, even Snowshoe in W.Va. is better than Ski Wisp (for skiing)...

Google Killington and you will find the real time camera site on the slopes--it is www.iski.com or similar. Very granular corny East Coast snow but good slopes for snowboarding.

thanks

Sweet, that's what I wanted.....personal experience. The trip was more to get away - not primarily a "ski trip". My extended family would be going too....and they have huge houses for rent there with indoor pools in the basement, lakefront, etc. Very expensive but not too bad split up among seven families. I figured it sucked - I just wanted to hear firsthand.

I've been to all the places up north....Stowe is my favorite. Killington is always too busy. I just don't think I can convince my aunts/uncles to drive 7 hours.

For my true skiing/boarding itch - I'm going to Utah in a couple months.

Ahh. I went to Deer Valley last year for the first time on a spur of the minute trip I bought off a friend of mine who couldn't use it, but my yearly standard is to a client's super-lux condo at Jackson Hole, Wyo. in late Feb. I hear Park City is set up big time for the 'boarders. I am not big into 'boarding (snowboarding that is--totally into surfboarding, windsurfing and kiteboarding), but man JH has a nice set up for that too and stooopid vertical drop compared to anywhere else out West. If you haven't check it out before you get too old

Seven Springs, Hidden Valley and Blue Knob are over my way. Maybe a 2-3 hour trip for you.

Seven Springs is the largest and most expensive with Hidden Valley right behind. They both have alot of places to rent there. Alot to do also, fairly large resorts.

Blue Knob is decent skiing but in the middle of nowhere and not really a "resort".

C'mon JD - no love for snowboarding? I actually do both, I'm a skisport bigamist I haven't been to Jackson Hole but it's on the list....I'd love to get out there soon.

Thanks vwbuge - all good places too. I've been to Seven Springs before but I'll keep the others in mind.

I usually stick to the Poconos for my routine adventures.....but it's nice to try them all out.

I used to live in the Poconos. Never cared for the place. A nice place to visit but HELL to live there. Too many tourists.
Montage is the only place up there decent.

Montage

Yep - that's my one of my favorites. In high school I'd always save the grocery store labels and get free lift tickets. Camelback could be nice - but it's way too crowded.

My other local choice is Blue Mountain......although unfortunately, I usually end up at Ski Roundtop, as it's 20 minutes from my office. I barely consider it a ski slope - but it scratches my itch, I suppose.

Killington rocks, my dads friend has a house on the side of it. Its so large that if you know your way around you can miss most of the lift lines. Just stay on the mountain.

Their are also some nice trails where you an bury beer.

When I first saw Outer Limits I was like WTF not me. I ski to relax not go flying down a mountain trying to not kill myself. But after a couple of beer stops, it was fun.

I actualy enjoy long blue trails like that. Some mountains have really good ones, you can tuck in and really get some speed up.

Hunter Mountain, NY was a good trip also. I frickin' loved that place but down the road is even better....Silver Creek I think it was called? The place was nicer and alot less crowded.

All this talk of skiing is torturous.

Anyone up for MB GTG at a slope? That would be a sweet picture....a whole row of diesels (and gassers) with roof racks loaded up.
