Fit Fatties Healthier Than Thin Couch Potatoes

http://www.nypost.com/seven/12052007/news/nationalnews/fit_fatties_healthier_than_thin_couch_po_480636.htm

December 5, 2007 -- When it comes to living longer, fitness may trump fatness, researchers said yesterday.

Everyone is different and there are exceptions to every rule. There are different ways to get fat and some are less likely to kill you than others. Being thin doesn't get you any guarantees either.

Extra weight is hard on your joints, etc and makes it more difficult to stay fit. It is kind of a chasing your tail thing, definitely not an improvement in quality of life.

I have been reading about the cytochrome p450 system that your body uses to detoxify poisons. It is easy to overload this system and when it is overloaded your body stores excess poisons in fat to be dealt with later. I am thinking that this is at least partly responsible for the "beer gut" look of so many americans. Our poison intake is beyond our bodies capacity to deal with it. It is another explanation of why visceral fat is so bad. It is that bad too, it will ruin your life.

Most of the information on this subject that I have been reading is related to pharmacology.

If the largest part of your belly is over or near 38 inches, do something about it.

"Men and women who were fit, as judged by a treadmill test, but were overweight or obese had a lower mortality risk than those of normal weight, but low fitness levels, the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed.

Exercise expert Steven Blair of the University of South Carolina and colleagues tracked the death rates of about 2,600 people age 60 and up, examining how physical fitness and body fat affected their death rates over 12 years."

Brilliant study - you mean being fit is now good for you? Who'd a thought!

You've got to be kidding!

Actually it doesn't always have to be hard on the joints. Swimming and cycling are good cardio activities that don't wreak your joints like running does.

If you avoid walking it doesn't have to be hard on the joints. Because of the mechanical advantage designed into the joints bearing one extra pound leverages to seven pounds on the knee joint. Your body is not designed to be overweight.

Maintaining muscle mass is crucial, a fatty with adequate muscle mass might be healthier than a skinny with way high body fat content.

A health care worker told me that almost 90% of their patient load is obese people. I think I would rather be not obese and not in the hospital.
