Differential Oil on the Carpet

Didn't seem quite correct to post this in tech help.

Recieved a differential from a breaker in the mail last week and instead of immediately lugging it to the garage I just left it inside by my front door.

However a seal had broken...

The oil leached through the box onto the carpet leaving a mild stain. That part doesn't worry me too much but the smell is wretched. Anyone have a miracle product?

Try Folex on the stain, Natures Miracle might work on the smell. Both products work well pet stains. Since my wife and I have a small herd of cats running through our house all the time I have become quite familiar with both products.

Natures Miracle is for organic stains (awesome stuff). Some kind of degreaser/solvent would be needed.

I'd try "jungle jake" run through a professional carpet cleaner

http://www.farmandfleet.com/catalog/product.aspx?i=217064&h=020405001

Safe for carpets, and it's one hell of a degreaser. biodegradable, non toxic. I like it. It's by the detergent and other wash stuff.

Ouch... sounds like its a bit of work. I struggle to take care of one animal. Thank you for the recommendations. I'll post a review once I've tried them. Looking forward to a stench free house.

I was glad to see that you weren't parking your car in the living room! I have known guys who parked their Harleys in their living room. Of course, THEY had oil stains on the carpet. They really weren't the type of guys who seemed to even notice the stains, though.

I need a pretty big hole in the wall for that

As I said its not so much the spot but the stench. I picked up several products today and we'll see what works. The local shops didn't have "Jungle Jake".

what color's the carpet?

If nothing else works, i'd be more then happy to pickup a jug and send it to you. It's very similer to simple green, which might be easier to find... I took this from their website... Apparently they sell a carpet cleaner

"CARPETS, RUGS, UPHOLSTERY
Simple Green Carpet Cleaner carries label instructions to be used as both a spot-stain remover and also in carpet extraction cleaning machines. It is an excellent choice for most carpets, rugs and upholstery — with a few precautions:

1. Always spot-test on an inconspicuous area (such as in a closet or spot that’s covered by furniture,) before cleaning large or prominent areas. This is to make sure that your carpet is colorfast and compatible with Simple Green.
2. Always follow the label directions.
3. Do not over-saturate the surface, as this can greatly increase drying time and enable mildew to form in damp carpet.
4. Original Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner can be used to spot-clean or machine clean your carpets but should not be used too strong on white or light-colored carpets, as the green color can sometimes discolor certain carpet fibers. If using original Simple Green instead of Simple Green Carpet Cleaner, dilute at 4 teaspoons to 4 cups of water for spot treating, or 3 ounces per gallon of water in a carpet extraction machine. Always spot test first."

In my opinion you are simply out of luck and will have to replace the carpet. In 1978 I spilled some differential oil on a sweatshirt I was wearing. I kept that shirt for probably 15 years afterwards, washing it many many times and spraying various stain removers on it. I was NEVER able to get rid of the smell. I kept it around partly because I was astounded at the amazing ability for that smell to continue to linger. The stains disappeared but I could always pick up the shirt and get that sulphur odor.
My recommendation would have been to cut out that carpet immediately before there was any opportunity for that smell to get into the subfloor. If I were in your shoes, I would replace the carpet with hardwood, just to get a solid surface between the subfloor and the human nose.

That would suck if you had to cut out the subfloor to get rid of it.

saturate the stained area with enough white vinegar to go to the floor. after it dries, put a shallow (i inch or so) bowl of white vinegar near the stain, close off the room as much as possible and repeat until the smell is gone.

Appreciate the offer it does look like its available for mail order though. The carpet is a very industrial off white speckled with grey and brown flecks. Not beautiful but it came with the place.

Thanks.

The grocery store had four carpet cleaners that advertised themselves as degreasers or at least had motor oil mentioned somewhere on the label. The first one I tried "Carbona" has masked the smell with its own powerful odor. Its a strong synthetic floral scent which, while not exactly my favorite, is massive improvement.

I like this one for being simple and inexpensive to try. Thanks!
