Big Bend Nat. Park

Just came back from 3 days in the area, Terlingua, Alpine, Marathon, Ft. Davis, and of course the National Park in the Chisos Mts. at the very bottom of the park. If any of you all get the chance you should make every effort to spend a few days here. Unfortunately it is about 50 ft. from the end of the Earth as far as convenient to get to goes but once there it is worth the effort. Great hikes, unbelievable views, great star gazing, very interesting geologics in the area. Terlinga, just to the west of the park's west entrance, has the requisite ghost town but this one is alive with an assortment of wanna be recluses that you wouldn't invite home to dinner but are interesting to see.

Highly recommended for anyone in the area.

Had a spring break canoe trip planned there a couple of years ago but had to call it off due to low water. Still want to go there.
You should see the film, No Country for Old Men if you like that region.

A must do in that area for the fall visits:

We’ve know the Tolbert family for years. This has become an annual thing for us to attend. It just doesn’t get any more fun than this, when it comes to cook-offs.

I went there a bunch when I lived in Austin, TX. Simply beautiful place. The most unique experience was this: Remember all the insanity of Y2K? The end of the world as we knew it? etc? Well, it just so happened that we had a trip planned for new years Y2K to Big Bend, figured why not. If the worlds gonna go in the crapper then at least I'll be a beautiful place. New years night one of the Rangers suggested we check out the new years party at a bar in an old theater in Terlingua Ghost Town, outside of Big Bend. What an experience that was! Several hundred people, mostly in costume or decked out to the nines, partying in this deserted place. Even the local Sheriffs were in attendance complete with matching chromed 45's, cocked and locked! What a weird and wonderful night. Kinda like Moss Eisley Spaceport meets a Tarantino movie. RT
