Any Podiatrists here?

I've recently been discerning dental school; however, I think podiatry is a similar field in that one works with his hands a lot. The field also has prestige and is not as demanding time-wise as allopatric medicine. I'd be curious to hear about people who have chosen this career field and what their thoughts on it are. I think that demand for podiatrists will go up, especially with the aging baby boomer population. The biggest mark against it, and it would be a big con, would be if medicine becomes socialized. I'm currently a junior in college and will have the pre-reqs. done by the time I graduate, so I can actually apply to any sort of professional health care school (medical, dental, podiatric, chiropractic, etc.).

Thanks
David

It makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about the stuff a podiatrist sees every day.

I think I would do better in a surgical situation than working with stuff like that.

Forget being a foot doc. Become a dentist. IMO, dentists will make a lot more money over their careers than a pod.

I think most insured folks, given the choice, will go see an ortho rather than a podiatrist. I did, when I had a bunion removed some years ago.
Most people care a lot more about their teeth than their feet.
So, the choice is smelly feet and ugly nails of rotten teeth and bad breath!

Consider becoming an orthodontist? Rewarding, good income, few emergencies. A good life.

Just my opinion, but I look at pods as someone who couldn't get into med or oestopathec school. But, I'm only one out of 300 million. No need to listen to me.

I’d think an increase in demand would have more to do with the increasing amount of weight people are lugging around on them.

Diabetic foot ulcers that can't heel(pun intended) are indeed a test to see if you can handle it. I know a few who went into the field for the reasons you just mentioned.

Is it an urban legend that dentists have the highest suicide rate of any profession?

One of my friends is going into trauma medicine or something like that, and another is going to be an anesthesiologist. If I was going the medical route which I never will because I suck at math, and never want to study that hard. But if I were I'd go dental. At least you don't have to worry about killing people, and teeth are only so bad.

Its a good field to go into though, because you are going to make at least $200k-$300k a year. Open up your own practice and you can do better. The school part is tough but at least the payoff is their.

From a business point of view, dentist have some of the highest business start up cost of any medical profession. In addition to all the unique hardware costs (chair, workstation, tools, x-ray), the infrastructure costs (plumbing, power, ventilation) either make it hard to find new space or means that a landlord really has you by the cajones when lease renegotiations come up.

That's very interesting insight, MTI. I still think I'd prefer dentistry over podiatry, but the latter has been gaining points lately. I guess if I were to go into podiatry it would probably be in some kind of orthopedics office. I don't think I'd want to have my own small office just for podiatry since those people don't really do surgery.

Thanks
David

True, the dentist that shares the building with us solved that problem, he owns the building. Its leased to our office, some other company, and a synagog(sp?)
