Thumbs down Knife At Lunch Gets 10-Year-Old Girl Arrested At School

http://www.wftv.com/news/14858405/detail.html

A 10-year old Ocala girl brought her lunch to school and a small kitchen knife to cut it. She now faces a felony charge after being arrested. The school and the sheriff's office disagree on the reason for the arrest.

School officials say the 5th grader was brown-bagging it. She brought a piece of steak for her lunch, but she also brought a steak knife. That's when deputies were called.

Is this a joke or what? Why charge the 10 year old for something as trivial as this?

Yes, that is bizzare and very OCD. We don't think anymore as a society. Apparently the readers in FL agree also. Readers were asked: A 10-year-old Ocala girl brought her lunch to school and a small kitchen knife to cut it. She now faces a felony charge after being arrested. Do you think arresting the girl was too extreme?

Yeah, what was she supposed to do? Hold it in her hands and rip it apart with her teeth? Like a . . a. . wild animal? Another good example of people having completely lost their minds.

I've heard on kids being arrested for having asprin at school.

Welcome to the post-911 and school "shoot-em-up days...no tolerance whatsoever! Makes even the most trivial of incidents escalate into potential terrorism!

I think arrest and charges were too extreme...suspension perhaps, or sent home, but that's about it. Problem is, administration may find that the school handled the issue too leniently and subsequently fire the prinicpal!

It's an office policy violation where I work if you show up with cutlery. FAA mandate,

And Mom or Dad (or kid) should have cut the steak into bite-sized pieces when preparing the lunch. It's every parent's responsibility to read school policy, especially as extreme as things have become. So if anything, the parents should have been bashed for this one, not the kid.

I sued a school district for this in 2002. Assistant principal went nuts in Principal's absence and sent, yes, a 10 year old to jail for accidentally carrying a small pocket knife to school. He had carried his backpack on a boy scout campout the weekend before and the knife was left in there. It was a rural county with no juvi so they put him in a cell for 48 hours with a bunch of crackheads and even an accused child molester. That is as much detail as I can share, but there were damages. Principal got back from a conference and immediately caused the child to be released, charges dropped and made a feeble attempt at an apology.

We got zeroed.

Dumb@$$ father of the child made a comment to the effect that if it would have been a child of a different race, he never would have gone to jail and the jury was of that race.

My HS freshman son was sitting in the cafeteria reading a book at lunch. Principal comes up and asks what he is reading. Son shows him: Book on nuclear weapons by an MIT professor (book was about dangers of them and possibility of terrorists using them). Principal looks, figures, "yeah, that's Bob"s kid-smart kid" and goes on his way. Private high school. Care to guess the results in youtr local public HS #9?
