Anone here know anything about alcoholic ketosis?

A old, close friend is in the hospital with renal failure, liver issues pancreatitis and, now I've heard, alcoholic ketosis. 50/50 chance.

I knew he was a heavy drinker at times, but this is looking grim.

Sorry to hear that, Randy. I had an old friend from childhood who died last year. He died from complications related to his heroin addiction. It's sad to see people we care about slowly kill themselves with drugs and alcohol. Some people just have so much pain in their lives and aren't strong enough to do what needs to be done about it.

I will be thinking about your friend.

Somehow I am not hopeful based on what you are saying. Even if he does survive, he might find life pretty miserable.

I've heard the term "ketosis" relative to diabetes. I think it has something to do with the body having too much sugar in it. You go through that in the initial stage of the Atkins diet because you're burining off excess sugar from your system. I guess that is something that happens in alcoholics becasue of the sugar content in alcohol.

The pancreatitis is bad enough. The other problems paint a very grim picture. I hope he's comfortable and has loved one's around.

What is the difference between alcoholic ketosis and alcoholic ketoacidosis?

AKA sufferers will have high sugar levels while ketosis people will have normal sugar levels.

Don't assume it is from drinking. Other chemicals cause the same type of damage. The official explanation, blaming it on drinking, cuts down on lawsuits. The damage from drinking usually happens in people who drink instead of eat.

Well, the Drs say he's over the hump...kidneys showing signs of improvement, pancreas doing better, etc, etc...apparently, at one point he had a <15% chance of survival.

Alcoholism runs in both sides of his family and he's never done moderation worth a damn. OTOH, he's been on and off ill with some sort of virus for about a month and is on all kinds of blood thinners and cholesterol meds. Who knows what's going on...I'm sure I'll find out.
