My late grandfather and one or two of his posse would spend hours a day driving around our and a couple neighboring towns to find the cheapest gas and cheapest senior cup of coffee. He was retired with nothing really better to do, and I think he kind of saw it as a hobby. Which is a good thing because there's no way he ever saved any money with all of the gas he burned! If nothing else at least he scouted it out for the rest of us.

Man I don't even pay attention to the price anymore. I just fill it up when I need it. I know I'm getting screwed anyway so I might as well not know how bad it is.

Isn't it pretty simple math? I usually do it in my head while driving, and then go to the same station I always do. When I'm out of town I shop a little more, but then it's more about ease of access and minimal trip impact than price. My favorite is watching the people line up at the local AM/PM and wait 20 minutes to save $.11 a gallon. 20 gallon tank, not quite empty, pump 17 gallons, and save $1.87... Man, is that worth it! I won't bother to begin discussing the quality of fuel.

Its never worth it.

It seems to very about $.10 a gallon here at most. The cheap stations are $3.09 and the low volume guys seem to be at $3.19. My POS VW takes about 10 gallons, so I'm saving a $1 at most, usualy the difference is much less.

I've got a theory, if it's less than a nickel don't even think about it. That usually applies to me holding out for the next station though. I never go in search of cheaper gas. I just make mental notes of where it's cheap. I have a 15 mile drive to work each day and I know which gas station on either end of my drive is cheapest.

I also went up to my parents place in GA for Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you're travelling I-95, exit 29 was the cheapest. I paid $2.74 on the way up and 2.76 on the way back for 87 octane.
