Lonely Nevada highway

Highway 95, between the Oregon border and Winnemucca, NV. You can see the snow, but I checked the roads -- dry, good traction. They sand regularly. About 27 F most of the time. Sorry about the poor pics. One good reason to get an iPhone . . .

Speed racers, eat your hearts out . . . . .

Well, you get the idea. To commemorate the 268,000 milestone on my Bimmer, I took these shots on said highway:

Yeah, I know that's tame for some of you big MB guys, but I was pleased with it at that mileage figure. About as fast as this well worn sweetie will go anymore, but good enough for me.

I was passed at some point by an S 500 or 600, couldn't tell exactly, looked to be a few years old. Didn't see him again. I had just passed a semi, was doing about 80 and he passed the semi and me both.

More, these were taken quite a while apart:

The view leaving beautiful downtown Winnemucca, Nevada:

Nice. I did much the same on U.S. 50 about two months ago. No cops. long straight stretches. Nice views too. I actually thought some of central Utah was prettier than Nevada.

I did 50 in Utah back in '92. Some gorgeous scenery. The Red Rocks areas are a national treasure, IMO.

I was on that road around 1980 or so, in a '72 Skylark I had back then.

Went to see the big copper mine in McDermitt right near the Oregon border.

Stopped in a bar out there, and talked to a few locals. One of them had a Potato ranch in Winnemucca he offered to sell me for $10,000

There was a bunch of whorehouses, legal ones, maybe around 6 or 7 of them, around downtown Winnemucca at that time, I believe.

Outside of Clark County (Las Vegas) and Washoe County (Reno) prostitution is pretty much legal at the option of the other counties (White Pine, Douglas, Lander, Nye, Storey, Mineral, etc.)

Beautiful country vistas, excellent for high speed driving in some areas, if you don't get ticketed

Riding thru Utah about ten years ago with a buddy,,, we hit a stretch shortly after we left Arches National Park. I was on a ZX11 Kawasaki,,, he was on a ZX10. We hit a stretch where you could see 50 miles in any direction. I looked at him and he at me. We nailed it and traveled at between 120 and 130 MPH for 15 minutes or so. An experience that will never be topped or lived again.

Just took a look at the maps.

Reno to SLC on I-80 appears to be 550 miles of barren wasteland........

That's got to be loooong stretch to drive.........no surprise that folks drive 100 mph in there.

We drove that stretch of I-80 from Boulder via Cheyenne to Reno in one day a few years ago. It actually was unique driving into the mountains from the east. We dropped in the Eagles Greatest Hits and floored it...up to about 80mph.

Boulder to Reno in one day..........1075 miles...........????

HTF did you do that?? You'd need to be at 80 mph for 13 1/2 hours and piss in a cup.

Did Carlsbad, CA to Midland TX (1150 miles) stopping only for gas, food, and bio breaks - just over 15 hours.

Plan was to do it in two chunks, but then we dropped over the mountains at 2:00 AM and it was over 90F outside. Driving a Miata with no AC we figured going through the desert in daylight was NOT a great idea - especially with my pale skinned red headed wife riding shotgun.

Got to see saguaros at sunrise - truly beautiful.

One of two 6500 mile Miata round trips (CA to CT) for a bar-b-que. Also have done San Diego to Moab (with my then 10 year old son) and a couple San Diego to San Franciso for the weekend trips.

Yea, I guess I like driving my yada.

Those are some long distances. My personal limit is 685 miles...........NY to Cincinnati........takes 12 hours with two stops. Beyond that, I can't function very well and will probably choose the airplane.

That was the second half of the trip. We drove from Milwaukee to Boulder the previous day. The second day was from Boulder to Reno. And yet we still managed time to run the car on the salt flats at 127mph

We're going to have to do the trip again in the springtime but with the car in tow.
