i need some window/paint stripper advise.....
i am working on my great grandmothers rental property , that i plan to move into. it is a beautiful historic house. the previous renters trashed the place and i have alot to do. one of my main concerns is the windows. it has the old crank type and there are about 22 million coats of paint on them. they dont function as well as they could because of this. i belive the window pains are held in by clay? i would like to take a paint stripper to them and remove as many layers as possible. i have thought about the possibility of lead paint. so my question is, is it possible to do without damaging the ?clay?

If you do it in the summer, you can spray a window with easy off oven clean and put it in a clear plastic garbage bag in the hot sun. After a few hours the paint will almost fall off. The windows are probably due to be reglazed. google window glazing and you should find decent instructions.

Yeah, what he said.
But, crank windows on a "historic" house? (My 1920 vintage house has double-hung)

why would i want to reglaze them? its all in good shape, just a ton of paint. i have since realized the answer to my question. i installed four new windows today, three of them being frosted in the bathroom.
