First question is what you're going to do with it... With that 8800, it looks like you're building a gaming machine. The 8800 is a top of the line card. You may not need that kind of performance if you're looking for decent performance but not the best... I would ditch the 2nd 10k RPM drive for a 7200RPM with 500G or so to use for media storage and put the OS on the 10K.

If it's just for gaming, you might get satisfactory performance from an overclocked single core CPU and save some green.

everything, games, typing out papers, browsing the web, LOTS of dowloading, and just genral use. oh and im going into computer scince so im gonna be putting computer language writing tools on there.

it's going to be tricky to pick everything up for less than $600. I suggest cutting one of the 10K drives and substituting your storage with a 7200 for less frequently accessed items.

Sorry, I was editing while you were responding. If it helps, I'm building a part time gaming, part time HD video editor with the following:

Intel E6750 Dual core CPU
Some MB, haven't decided yet...
10K hard drive for OS
7200/500G HD for media storage (may go up or add another drive later)
DVD burner
CD/DVD ROM player

On board video and audio for now to be upgraded if they don't prove satisfactory. All drives are 3G/S SATA. Case is mATX for portability and a 400W PS.

I've been playing HL2 and Doom 3, etc...

On edit, $600? Hell, I think that 8800 card is upwards of 4-500 alone! Unless it's gone way down since I last looked.

its gone down $200, well the one i would be buying. there are deff more expensive graphics cards a differnet 8800gt goes for $1300+

Ahhh, I love computers.

I have several setups.

My first is my dual quad core mac.

My second is my intel core 2 quad.

My third is my AMD x2 rig.

My favorite is the AMD. Never let me down, like my Mercedes.

10k RPM hard drives are fast and nice, but you can get like 3x500GB hard drives for the price, stick em in raid 0, and it will eat the 2 10k RPM drives alive.

E_420 01-01-2008 07:31 PM

i was planning on throwing them in raid. and what do you guys think about overclocking?

iwrock 01-01-2008 07:35 PM

How fast?

All my boxes are watercooled.

My Intel Quad is at 3.9 Ghz stable.

My AMD is 3.6ish stable.

The Mac I dont know how to overclock, LOL.

Buy the 3 500 GB hard drives, and do Raid 5. Fast, and safe.

Me, depends on the machine.

My AMD has 4 Raptor 10k RPM hard drives in raid 0.

The Intel Quad has 3 Caviar 1TB drives in Raid 5.
