In harm's way
Iranian ships 'harass' U.S. Navy, officials say
From Barbara Starr CNN (CNN) -- The U.S. military reported Monday on a "significant" confrontation involving five Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats that "harrassed and provoked" three U.S. naval ships in international waters over the weekend. U.S. military officials said the incident occurred Saturday night in the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping channel leading in and out of the Persian Gulf. The five Iranian ships made "threatening" moves -- in one case coming within 200 yards of a U.S. ship, the U.S. officials said. In one radio transmission, the Iranians told the U.S. Navy: "I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes," the U.S. military officials told CNN. When the U.S. ships heard that radio transmission, they manned their gun positions and officers were "in the process" of giving the order to fire when the Iranians abruptly turned away, the U.S. officials said. The article should have read:

In one radio transmission, the Iranians told the U.S. Navy: "I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes". There was a sudden flash on the horizon and all Iranian ships were destroyed.

What a bunch of idiots! I can't imagine anyone with good sense doing something like that. What did they hope to accomplish, I wonder?
It sounds more like something a bunch of kids would do.

Oh, so there's a method to their madness. Is this pretty routine, then?

I just can't get the picture of a few Iranians in one of those cheapo "Made In China" inflatable boats like you get at WalMart, propping each other up for support, holding onto an AK-47. One of them rowing with the oars that are about 2' too short for their purpose, one trying to balance with the gun, and the other with on of those old man sailor caps barking out orders.

Now imagine 5 of them, each with a 200 HP Mariner carrying maybe 300# of Semtex in the bow coming at the ship at 40 mph. Or maybe not carrying anything.
The sailor sees a guy in a Zodiac coming at the ship. He has 2 minutes to call the bridge and for the bridge to decide shoot or don't shoot. Or say you're the captain in hostile waters and CIC reports they've got a potential military attack aircraft loaded with air-to-surface missiles and flying the same parameters as commercial airliners but being military, they may or may not have the IFF turned-on. Or maybe it is an airliner and it's got some dip***** pilot who has his squawk turned off. Or maybe it is a commercial airliner loaded with 30 tons of high explosives on a suicide mission. The aircraft is flying at 28,000 ft and a couple of miles down-range, or 15 seconds by airborne missile. Shoot or wait to see what happens? B |

Iranians threatened U.S. ships in Hormuz: Pentagon
By Andrew Gray Reuters WASHINGTON Five Iranian boats made aggressive maneuvers and showed hostile intent towards three U.S. Navy ships at the weekend in the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route in the Gulf, the Pentagon said on Monday. The Pentagon said the incident was serious. It described the Iranian actions as "careless, reckless and potentially hostile" and said Tehran should provide an explanation. In Tehran, the Iranian foreign ministry described the incident as ordinary. "The example that happened on Saturday was similar to previous cases and is an ordinary and natural issue," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini told Iran's official IRNA news agency. "This is an ordinary issue that happens for the two sides every once in a while and, after the identification of the two sides, the issue is resolved." The incident was the latest sign of tension between Washington and Tehran, at odds over a range of issues from Iran's nuclear program to U.S. allegations of Iranian support for terrorism. President George W. Bush is due to travel to the Middle East this week on a trip he has said is partly aimed at countering Iranian influence. "We urge the Iranians to refrain from such provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident in the future," White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said. Oil prices briefly rose on the news about the confrontation as dealers weighed the threat to oil shipments along the key shipping route. Crude futures jumped 49 cents to $98.40 a barrel before slipping back. In March, Iran seized 15 British sailors and marines in the Gulf and accused them of trespassing in Iranian territory while they inspected a merchant vessel. London maintained the British personnel were in Iraqi waters. The British personnel were held for almost two weeks before being freed in what Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said was a "gift" to the British people. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the three U.S. ships had been in international waters passing through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday when they were approached by five fast boats, at least some of which were visibly armed. "This is a serious incident," Whitman said. "Clearly this is something that deserves an explanation." "AGGRESSIVE MANEUVERS" The boats were identified as Iranian and "made some aggressive maneuvers against our vessels and indicated some hostile intent," Whitman said. "This required our vessels to issue warnings and conduct some evasive maneuvering," Whitman told reporters. "The U.S. Navy vessels were prepared to take appropriate actions... but there was no engagement of the vessels." Other Pentagon officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Iranians made threats by radio and a U.S. captain was in the process of ordering sailors to open fire when the Iranian boats moved away. The incident took place about 4 a.m. GMT on Sunday, or late Saturday night in Washington, the officials said. According to the officials, the radio transmission from one of the Iranian ships said: "I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes." The Iranian boats were believed to belong to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, the officials said. In October, the United States designated the Revolutionary Guard Corps a proliferator of weapons of mass destruction and its elite Qods force a supporter of terrorism. An "informed source" from the naval force of the Revolutionary Guards was quoted by Iranian state television as saying: "There were no out of the ordinary contacts between the Guards' naval force and American ships." In his account of the incident, the source said three U.S. naval ships were asked by Guards' vessels "as usual" to identify themselves "which they did and they continued their path." Yeah, What was it that hit the Cole? That wasn't much of a boat, but they had plenty of explosives packed into it.

Awful tragedy. Preventable? Probably. OTOH, you have the British sailors a few months ago that got captured and totally humiliated their Navy and nation by their unconscionable behavior because in that instance they were too timid. The tactical situation in the Straits of Hormuz are so tight and tense that anybody who f**ks-up even a little bit is likely to either rain-down hellfire or wreck his career. At least the politicians are safe. B |

Seems to me the dumb thing for us to do at this point is to whack a bunch of Iranians who are taunting us. Ahmadenejad is rapidly losing support and this whole thing may have been designed by him so he would have had the chance to make an aggressive response that he could have spun as valiant to muster his flagging support.
