My trip to Germany

My wife and I just got back from a trip to Garmisch, just south of Munich. As we drove back to the airport, we passed the Mercedes building just off the ring road. They had set up a giant advent calendar and each day a new Mercedes model was revealed behind a window. I found the attached photo online.

In Garmisch, there was the usual plethora of Unimogs, and several W123s (diesel and gas). There was a very nice G-wagen at the St. Martin's gasthof up on the side of the mountain. On the hike up, I mentioned to my wife that they must have some serious crawlers to get up and down to and from the restaurant with supplies and staff; we get to the top, and lo and behold, there sits the G with chains on the tires. Go figure. There were too many newer MB's to count, of course... wish I'd had time to hit the junkyards in Munich!

You better 'hit' the English Garden for a 'Mass Bier' during summer time ...

I suspect my kid is going to be lobbying to go on a school trip to Germany this summer. He is taking German 1 now, during intersession and wants to take German 2 during spring semester. Rumor has it there is a school trip planned for early summer for those who have had 1 & 2. He of course has neglected to tell us about the trip. What the heck, I've got him pointed in the right direction. He want to be an engineer for MB! Still not sure I want to turn my soon to be 17 year old (junior in high school/freshman in college) loose that far from the back of my hand. Wish I could make the trip, but too busy/broke. Think wife will lobby to go and protect young son.

Nice! My family stayed at the Patton Arms Hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen back around '91...really would like to go back sometime.

The Edelweiss Lodge (where we stayed) has replaced the Patton. The latter has been given back to the Germans, and at the moment, I think, is unoccupied. The new facilities are outstanding, though; I would recommend a visit in a heartbeat!

SWEET! I just checked the website, and they're still doing Operation R&R. I may have some R&R leave coming to me in the next 12-18 months.

Operation R&R is a VERY nice program; if you can swing it, by all means, get over there! Let me know if you do; I can send along lots of useful info on the area.
