WHat does Junk Yard pay for a car?

Reason I ask, I was driving around yesterday and saw a tow truck hauling a 240D. I managed to stop him and take a look at the car. 82 4 speed, rusty with a bad clutch. New Michelins and Alloys. The driver said it was being hauled to the crusher. I asked him what he will get for it he said by the pound and for this car 3500Lbs it would be $300.00. Pay me $300 its yours. Is this true?? How much does the crusher actually pay any idea?

Locally it's currently .085 cents per pound for vehicles.

A car for less than nine cents a pound sounds pretty good. Of course, anything is only worth whatever you'll pay for it. Seems like you could get a lot more than that just parting it out, though.

Wisconsin's up to 155 a ton (opposed to apparently 170 in Mississippi)

Aluminium rims are .75 per LB

Straight up aluminium is .90 per lb (cleaned aluminium engine block)
I pull batteries, radiators/condensors, rims and transmissions if they're easy enough.

I also stuffed the last car I scrapped with old steel bike parts, and used oil filters (they said just let them drain upright before putting them in the car)

Paid $160, put 2 hours of work into it, and scrapped it for $260 total

I need sleep, have fun

Did you end up buying the car??? Tires are worth that, plus you can scrap it yourself for not a whole lot less then that...

My 190E was $7 per 100lbs (.70/1lb)Last week I got $6.75 per 100 for the 240D (.675)
I'm going to call around a bit...but when I've got 2 scrapyards only 15 miles away it's easy.

Where I go requires me to take my wheels with me.

No another member is looking at it today. I am useless at parting out stuff. All the pieces will be broken. I really wanted the wheels and tires for my 280SE.

Well, I looked at that car for Mike today. Body extremely rusted out, including floors under both seats. Aluminum front bumper corroding badly where chrome has peeled away. Seller said clutch is burned up. It has about 300K miles on it. Rear tires good but fronts worn on inside due to alignment problem - not completely worn out but not good enough to pay $300 for only 2 really good tires. And Mike lives in a townhouse and sold his 300D, so there's nowhere to keep, and currently no reason to have, a W123 parts-car. I'd be tempted too, but I have too many vehicles already and am trying to keep under the county's radar. Also a 300K-mile parts-car isn't my first choice. Last Fall, there was a wrecked manual 240D, with about half the mileage, in Virginia Beach that I would have prefered.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I've seen ads paying between $50 - $200 (regardless of type of car) including the tow.

its worth the effort to prep it for scrap..

salvage yards give you crap for the car then go make tons of money of it(if its in demand).. then they sell it for scrap value and make even more money...

If I had the room and a barn I would strip cars down to the bare chasis and sell everything off of it. what ever doesn't sell gets scrapped later down the line

I bought a 92? geo storm for $160 (after they tranny dropped it till it wouldnt move, then blew it up :p)

Pulled the radiators and condencor ($20)
Pulled the valve cover, and head ($35)
Scrapped the car ($190)
and then scrapped the aluminium rims ($65)

I was a happy little scrapper
