Best way to remove a 10 year old bumper sticker?

My recently purchased 240D has a large bumper sticker on the trunk lid. ARGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!! I HATE bumper stickers as they are always a pain to remove. Thankfully this one is only a university sticker and not some stupid political slogan.

Does anybody have a fairly painless way to remove them without destroying the decent paint job that is on this car?

Thanks guys!

Just keep in mind that as soon as you pull that bumper sticker off, the original paint color will be staring at you and it'll be obvious that you removed the sticker. I've never removed old ones, but I would think some kind of adhesive remover would work. I use the 3M stuff in a metal can (similar to a Brasso can). You can find it at auto parts stores.

...if that sticker's truly been on there for 10 years, chances are, sun-fading could have already marred the paint (as in a nice dark spot under the sticker). Tried goof-off?

I would remove as much of the surface as possible to expose the paper backing. The use paint thinner of mineral spirits to soften/remove the glue. It's a PIA but it works.

I would use a hair dryer to soften the adhesive and then use a thinner to clean up the remains after peeling it off.

alcohol is good to remove adhesives but i would find a spot on the car and test it so you don't damage the paint.

He he he...don't want to damage the paint on a 25 year old car... What condition is the rest of the paint in?

Goo Gone will get it off, but if it's been on that long, no telling how it will look afterwards.

I'd try a hair dryer or heat gun first and try to peel it off. Make sure you let the spot cool back to ambient before you try ANY solvents.

I second the WD-40 approach, but first you must sign my liability waiver.

Hair dryer to loosen the glue, then adhesive remover. I wouldn't recommend paint thinner unless you don't like the car's paint either.

I second the hairspray suggestion and the thinner or WD40 to remove the glue.
Polish the old paint around it to match.

Also whenever you peel anything like masking tape or a sticker off of a painted surface; don't pull it straight out; you may pull the paint off with it. Pull the tape or sticker backwards onto itself gently... and at an up or down angle.
(Ive painted a lot of cars)
