HDMI cables?

I got a new DVD player for Christmas, nothing fancy(not H/D or Blue Ray), but better than what I was using. It has an HDMI connector on it, and I have a H/P 42" plasma TV. Are these HDMI cables worth the price? I currently have it hooked up via the "component" 3 cable method, which looks great. Just wondering if the $50 for an HDMI cable is really going to make that much diff.

well unless your DVD player will up convert the DVD the HDMI cable will do little to make the picture look better. Even on a player that will up convert you will not notice much of a difference.

Hi have the same TV and was told by several people that yes it is worth the 50.00- 100.00 so I hooked them up I don't see much difference the TV is crystal clear before the HDMI

If you are able to get Verizon Fios, they will give you an HDMI cable.

I'll be getting mine in 10 days.

What he said. If you had an HD DVD player, you would want to use the HDMI cable.

if you really want to get the cable get it from these guys http://www.cyberguys.com/templates/SearchAll.asp?search=hdmi&sort=rev
I buy everything through them. the cables are good. as long as the back of your TV doesn't look like a wire jungle then these cables will do just fine. the reason for that is because the surrounding wires can cause interference in the cables. just route it out of the way of other cables.

i have referenced it before, but the january issue of popular mechanics has an interesting comparison of 3 different hdmi cables - a $300 monster cable, some expensive other brand, and a $13 cable from newegg.com. the consensus was that there was absolutely no difference between the cables. after all, it is a digital signal, which means on or off, 1 or 0.

i also have a fanatical friend who swears that hdmi is the devil and only exists as a tool to ultimately allow the mpaa and others to control your content to their heart's content. additionally, he correctly preaches that there is no technical quality difference between component and hdmi.

i run component at home between my upscaling dvd player and my 52" hd lcd (1080p) and i can attest to the fact that there is no noticeable quality difference when i use an hdmi cable instead.

How about SVHS and HDMI? I have a HP laptop with HD drive and HDMI and an SVHS connector and a Sony 32 inch LCD TV with both. Right now I am using the SVHS and it looks just fine but I don't have anything to compare it. Would there be a noticable difference between the quality?
Thanks,

Alex

Thanks guys. I think you've confirmed my suspicions. I'll probably wait until I upgrade to one of the HD-type DVD players, and I'm not doing that until one prevails. Anybody remember BetaMax?

BestBuy and those places have HUGE markups on cables and accessories. The best deals are online. HDMI cabling seems like a marketing ploy. It's just a wire after all. I'm thinking someone is collecting royalties on the connector design.

HDMI is the exact same DVI video signal that nearly every modern computer uses but with a different connector and additional pins for audio. Anyone can buy a $10 cable that converts a HDMI port to DVI or the other way around.

Nobody should ever pay more than $20 for a 6ft HDMI cable.

Why is that? Do they not have sufficient shielding? Seems like if they did, they would not be picking up any interference.

Yeah, what the others said, I'd never spend the bug bucks for HDMI. newegg.com has pretty much everything you should need for cheap.

For analog video, quality from least to best goes:

RF, Composite, S-Video, Component, RGB, RGBS, RGBHV

For digital video, from least to best goes:

RF, HDMI, DVI (though HDMI and DVI are pretty much interchangable, as stated, HDMI includes the convenience of audio) It's also a little hard to say that one digital standard is better than another except that one may be more subject to interference than another.

HDMI and DVI fall among the analog RGB's for quality and I doubt the human eye could tell the difference.

Save your money and let time and market pressures drive the HDMI cable prices down. I just helped a friend set up a new Sony HDTV and HD satellite receiver. The first edition of the setup was without a HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV; the second was with HDMI cable. No difference in picture quality was detected.
