Somehow I just don't think I could enjoy a cup of coffee that only casts a dollar . . . . It seems so gauche.

What cracks me up is that Starbucks isn't really that expensive when you look at the rest of the market now. If you want to blame the trend on Starbucks, fine, but most other coffee stores have followed suit and charge roughly the same for their "gourmet coffee." Go in Dunkin Donuts and a 12oz. black coffee is only about 10 cents cheaper than a 12oz. black coffee at Starbucks. I know it's different in every region, but my daily Starbucks is $1.65. If you like coffee (and I mean COFFEE ... not coffee-flavored sugary cream), Starbucks has a unique flavor and depth to it. It's a matter of preference, but the 10 cents difference is well worth it for me. When I go in Starbucks, they know what drink I want and are pleasant and fast. When I go in Dunkin Donuts, they don't speak my native language and have repeatedly messed up my request for plain black coffee (is there any order simpler than that?).

Or maybe I'm just a huge snob. I do, after all, drive a Mercedes-Benz ...

Yeah, that's a classic ... and true in any big city. There are Starbucks within 100 yards of another Starbucks. Around here the big thing is a mini-Starbucks in every grocery store. It's nice to be able to feed my Starbucks addiction while I shop for cat food and broccoli.

You live on cat food and broccoli, yet you blow money on gourmet coffee?

No, the broccoli is for my cat ...

I do live extremely frugally, though, with Starbucks being my only vice. And again, every day, all I get is $1.65 plain black coffee. I'm actually kind of a compulsive saver. Have to really work hard to convince myself to spend on anything ... kind of a good problem to have, I guess.

Frugally? You drive a Mercedes, man! You must be one of those wealthy, big-spender, high-rollers!
