Have you Eaten Alligator? Was it Good?

I am watching Survivor Man on the Science Channel. He is in a Georgia swamp, infested with alligators.

This made me recall a recent trip to the supermarket, where I saw frozen alligator tail.

I have heard alligator tastes pretty good. Does it, really?

I have eaten Gator fritters in Fla. There used to be a joint that served it, it was located on I-95. Was not impressed, the taste to an extent was like white meat chicken but rubbery. Not worth it but do give a try. OTOH, rattlesnake was delicious, softer more supple than chicken and tasty as well.

Funny you should say that. Survivor Man caught a big rattlesnake just after I posted that message. He said it tasted great.

It does indeed, so does cobra, monitor lizard and most other reptiles.

I did have some kind of alligator meatballs, fixed cajun style when I was in Louisiana many moons ago. Could have been dog meat for all the spices and "stuff" in it, but it was real good!

I had alligator in Sydney Australia. Pardon the cliche, but it tastes just like chicken, maybe a little bit more flavorful but very similar nonetheless. I also had kangaroo backstrap there, which they told me is similar to a filet - very very flavorful. This was in a pricey restaurant just a short walk from the Opera house, and not some cheap tourist trap, so I don't think they were stringing me along. I picked up some alligator jerkey in a grocery store and took it home with me.

What supermarket and where is it located?

I have heard that you cut the tail into slices and chicken fry it. It is supposed to be really good...

The dogs and my family all like it

We eat gator all of the time. I like it fried or grilled if I want it a little healthier.

Here's a link to a dog forum where I talk about feeding my dogs raw alligator. I have some pics there on page 2 and I'll try to also attach them here.

I was going to say "like chicken" to be funny, but I guess I would have been right, judging from the responses from those who have actually tasted alligator.

Beef tastes great and yet it doesn't make nearly as nice a pair of shoes as alligator does!

I've only had it once, but the next time I see it on the menu I'm having it. I quite enjoyed it. I think it was a Cajun themed restaurant in Pointe Orlando called LuLu's Bait Shack.

Wegman's in Fairfax, adjacent to Fairfax Corner, and the Fairfax County Govt. Center. There is another Wegman's in Dulles or Sterling, which surely has it as well.
