H.R. 888 rewrites history to support myth.

H.R. 888 rewrites history to support “Christian Nation” myth.

I was going to write a long rant about House Resolution 888, but vjack over at Atheist Revolution has done such a good job I’m just going to repost his entry here and hope he doesn’t mind:

Quote:
House Resolution 888, sponsored by Rep. Randy Forbes (R-VA-4th District), seeks to rewrite American history to include a number of falsehoods perpetuated by Christian extremists. This should be of grave concern to every American who values historical accuracy.

For many specific examples of the misinformation contained in H. Res. 888, see Chris Rodda’s excellent post at Talk To Action. It is long, but it really is a must read. Rodda has done an impressive job of debunking many of the claims contained in the resolution. Plain and simple, this is revisionist history intended to promote the “Christian nation” myth through deception.

For more information about the implications of H. Res. 888, talking points you can use when discussing what is wrong with it, and even a sample letter you can send to your Representative in Congress, see Bruce Wilson’s helpful post at Talk To Action. Contacting your Representative is especially important if he or she happens to be on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. You can find the letter I sent to my Representative here.

And why exactly should you care about any of this revisionist history stuff? Here are a few reasons:

* Revisionist history in the National Junior ROTC program
* Why the Christian right distorts history and why it matters
* Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the evangelical moment in American public life
* Christian reconstructionists are trying to take dominion in America—and they have powerful friends
* Beware the dominionists
* What is Christian nationalism?

Please join me in helping to spread the word about this one.
Contact your representatives and let them know your stance on this issue. I’m working on my letters as soon as I finish this entry. And if you don’t already have vjack’s blog in your blogroll then add it in. Good stuff.

Christian Revisionists, aka "Whig Reformers".

Also, it's not an issue of "Christians" here... People from all over the world are manipulating history and basically questioning the accuracy of historical accounts, or simply "forgetting" to include certain accounts within their own research, all in an effort to push their agenda, which can include the advancement of one social or religious group over another. The best recent example I can think of is Ahmadinejad saying that the Holocaust did not happen.

Regardless if one is Atheist, Christian, Jew, Muslim, White, Black, Green... this is a serious and often overlooked problem that has powerful consequences. After all, these "historians" are the same people that write the books my children will be studying from. This is why it's so important to study things with the use of primary sources.

Amen to that!

Simple research skills are sorely lacking nowadays. It's one of the main reasons agenda driven revisionist history is so popular today. For example, merely listen to what's being said about WWII these days.

Its not a bill, its a resolution. Like national asparagus day. With the same meaning. The tinfoil hat crowd is out in force today.

Oh yeah its amazing the BS thats passed off as history!

Look at Japan, they still won't talk about it. I just caught them again, even in the Full Metal Panic anime its the "war in the pacific". Those SOB's won't even call it what it was. And some European countries seem to really like to change it a bit so they look better.

Grasshopper, the answer is right at your fingertips. Look deep within your google and free yourself from this centrist global economic kabal that is threatening to denature our milk proteins.
