cpu help.......

I have a gateway laptop that recently crashed. Out of warranty and they will not help.

After installing the system cd's I find that I cannot access the internet wirelessly. Obviously I used to before.

More than likely, I have to install the drivers for it however, I cannot find out which device I have. I try to look in modems, but the wireless one is not show.

When I go to internet connections, it shows 1394 connected, but cannot go online.

Thoughts?

Go to the gateway site and look up your model and search for the wireless card drivers.

You'll have to guess driver since the computer doesn't know what it has until you tell it so....

You'll have to obviously use a different computer and transfer the drivers to your notebook to install the wireless software that way.

Whats the model...

We can help you find drivers.

diametricalbenz has it correct, might even be a gateway id tag you can enter that will help figure it out.

1394 is actually a fire wire port that for some strange reason Gateway configures as a sort of gateway between your computer and the network device (ie wireless, NIC or modem). I never did figure out why or whatfor. But I believe you can eliminate it.

I will find out and provide info when possible. I am at my home cpu now.

Is there a way for me to find out specifically which wireless card I have? I bought the cpu from tiger direct, btw.

Gateway insists that it does not have a wireless card and will only give me info on the modem.

Thanks!

Right click the My Computer icon on your desktop, click properties>hardware>hardware>device manager. Look for any object there with a yellow exclamation mark, that should be your wireless card if you have it.

Gateway was useless as they insisted that I do not have a wireless device.

Anyway, I am at the cpu now and under the device manager, I only have yellow question marks under "other devices" I do have a tab called network adapters that has the 1394 adapter and intel pro\200 ve network connection.

I hope this helps you help me.

Go back to the device manager, and right click the unknown device, and then click properties. Click the details tab, and then on the dropdown, select hardware IDs.

What does it say next to VEN_ and DEV_?

We can figure out what device it is if we have those.

I believe I have found the wireless device.

Could it be intel?pro100ve network connection?

If this is it, I cannot believe the gateway tech could not find it.....
