Motorcycle carb tuning...???

I have a '79 Kawasaki that I am trying to resurrect. I got her running last year but really rough. Time to rebuild the carbs. The bike has a 4 into 1 Kerker and Accel super coils. Should I ditch the stock airbox and go with individual pods and re-jet appropriately? If so, can anyone suggest a jet size to start out at?

Denis Kirk sold K&N Stage I and II jetting kits, see if they are still available. They are the best match.

I thought about that but they only offer a stage III kit for my bike. I will need the rebuild kits for the bike anyway ($70). For another (less than $20) I can get the individual jets I need.

I'd stick with the stock airbox unless you have a good reason to do otherwise. That way, the inlet pressure is nearly identical across the carbs. You still may need rejetting because of engine changes, particularly timing chain stretch.

I'm curious to see what is in the carbs now. I bought the bike when I was a kid from a local guy who raced bikes. It already had the header and pipes. It sure didn't run like a 650 when she was tight before 7 years of storage.

I'll rebuild the carbs and see how it goes from there.

I just sold a '78 gs 1000. They are quick bikes.
