Went to Pull-A-Part in Atlanta... Depressing

I have never gone somewhere and come back so depressed. Dozens of mangled, beat up, nasty Mercedes-Benz carcases everywhere. I almost felt sick.

I even saw 1992 300Es there, you know, my car is a 1989... How could this be???

Hopefully the super bowl will cheer me up...

Why are you going to a junk yard in the first place if it makes you depressed, you are looking for parts for your Benz right?

The more Benze's I found at the JY the happier I was, now with my Volvo 780 I always return home depressed...

What exactly were you expecting? They are junked out old cars that served their purpose, many of them in accidents protecting their drivers.

Big deal!

The weirdest thing I saw on a junk yard was a dozen brand new Mazda's ready
to get crushed. I know some brands destroy the cars used for marketing. But seeing brand new cars getting crushed is depressing,

There is a classic Volvo boneyard in Ravenna Ohio which is a treasure trove of 50s, 60s and 70s Swedish steel. Half of the old beauties are stacked on top of newer 80s 240s - some 2 or 3 high... to keep the good older cars out of the snake-infested swampland that encroaches on the yard during the wet season.

I found great stuff there, but it was sad to see all those old beauties destined to rot in an Ohio farm field.

I know how you feel- I almost never love a new car the way I connect with the old ones.

Which Pull-a-Part did you go to in Atlanta? Buford Hwy? I always had great luck there- I found euro headlight plug connectors there which enabled euro conversion on my 85 300TD. Who knew!?!

I enjoy listening to the way the doors close on those junkers. Almost every Mercedes door still works and sounds "right". Many other brands do not.

The bright side, is we have those graveyards so that we the Benz Lifers can keep on driving them and remind the universe there is nothing like driving/owning a piece of history. That wasn't so bad now, was it?

I love the junk yard, especially since the last time I went, I found a slew of Mercs I didn't even know were there.

Aye, I went to get 2 rear window switches for the 280C and a the rear seat vacuum pump for the locks of the 300E.

I mean, I was expecting to be damage to the cars, but some people do not care to close the doors after they take what they want. Then it rains and makes everything soggy and nasty. It was a bit sickening to see an M103 with water filled to the brim in the valve cover-less cylinder head. Sure the engine may be toast from some mechanical failure, but still.

I dunno, I am over it now, but it was a downer for sure.

Just had to vent.

In reply to the new Mazdas being crushed. Last year Mazda held this Zoom Zoom Live event where anyone, after filling out some forms, could drive any of the cars. (RX-8, 3, 6, CX-9, Miata) Since these were new cars that were driven very hard by people with varying skill level, they crushed each car afterwards OR used them for crash testing. (Thats what one employee said...)

A lot of the manual RX-8s had ruined clutches or syncros by the end of it all.
Maybe that was enough to crush for them? Scare of a lawsuit of a new owner found out the car was used to abuse when it was new?
