Smart Car

I saw one 2 days ago, in the Thousand Oaks-CA area, headed North on the 101 Freeway ... darkblue, looked like a convertible version.

They're coming!

They travel in packs...

I saw 6 of them following eachother down one of the main drags in Sacramento, CA.

They're all over my dealership like huge bugs. We've been selling the crap out of them apparently.

Huuuh, that sounds like a lot of fun. I have friends in Germany who love their little 'Smart'. They seem to be pretty reliable and easy going, esp. on the gas. They also have a little diesel version.

Just for the record: I'm not a small car fan ...

I saw something like this just before they came out with the new VW bug. It seemed to me they were road testing. They also had manufacturer's plates.

Maybe they try to get attention this way. It's been a popular way of advertising lately, to have a few cars travelling in a convoy ...

I first saw them on the streets of Italy back in 2000. They have been over there for quite sometime.

A friend of mine just bought one, black/silver. I'd love to do a detailed write up once I get a chance to drive it.

I saw one in the Golf Industry Show in Orlando last week, complete with golf bag brackets on the back. They seemed to be touting it as a street legal golf cart. So there might be a market for it.

If I could buy a diesel version of the Smart here in the US I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'm not too impressed with the gas version though. My Jetta which unlike the Smart is a 4-door sedan gets about the same mileage. But do expect even the gas version to be hugely popular. It seems there's already a big waiting list.

There's a whole section of the local M-B dealer dedicated to them. Saw one yesterday driving on the road nearby.

Ditto on the diesel part.

It helps a lot of people feel good about themselves under the guise of "doing something". A new Corolla gets better mileage yet the average person doesn't know that. They assume that because it's so small and cute (debateable by some) that it's just the bestest thing ever for the environment.

I remember seeing the Smart segment on the Today show or something, whatever morning b.s. show the wife was watching, and they were talking to the first dealer in NYC that had them. Whoever the person with the microphone made a comment about how they were surprised that they only get 30ish mpg. The dealer said that Mercedes, based on their customer input, determined that it was the best balance of mileage and performance.

I've seen them around my house every now and then. What kind of mileage do they get? They look okay for scurrying around town in, but I wouldn't want to get on the Beltway (The "Eight Lane Deathstrip) or the Interstate in one of them.

They only get around 30 mpg.
